Professional Experience:
Research on environment and development issues, market economy and industry issues: Working with one of the most well-known civil society organisations in India (Centre for Science and Environment), an academic institute of global excellence (University of Sussex) and a business consulting firm that is a trusted brand among Indian business (International Market Assessment India Pvt Ltd), has enabled me to approach public policy and economic issues from a multi-disciplinary perspective. During my work with the above-mentioned organisations, I have had direct exposure to the dynamics of policy-making in various government departments, both at the Central and state levels, and have responsible for project implementation as well as monitoring (including cross-country collaborative project).
Areas of work: At International Market Assessment I have undertaken research projects for national and multinational firms in various sectors of the economy, including agriculture, energy, science and technology, IT sector, homeland security, ports and shipping sector, hospitality sector, consumer durables, etc. The objectives of such research ranged from estimating market size in the different sectors for specific products and services, designing market entry strategies, developing location strategies, to conducting scenario planning.
At University of Sussex, I worked as the key coordinating personnel for a cross-country project that involved analysing India’s food safety policy, urbanisation policy, irrigation policy and relevant regulations, and wrote reports based on analysis. I also developed communication strategy for the project and liaised with project partners (Banaras Hindu University and Toxics Link) and other experts in the area.
At CSE, I was responsible for creating the research base and conducting advocacy for the organisation’s Right To Clean Air Campaign, which was the key mover in the introduction of numerous air pollution control measures in New Delhi and subsequently in other cities of the country. My profile included comparative research of environmental policies in India as well as in other countries and writing regularly for the organisations fortnightly magazine Down To Earth.
Effective communication: Whilst I have regularly written briefing papers, popular articles for magazines, newsletters, reports for development projects as well as proprietary consulting assignments and prepared dissemination materials, I have also made presentations to both national and international audiences and business clients who are typically senior executives.
Qualitative and quantitative analysis: My academic training has provided me with a strong grounding in both qualitative and quantitative analysis frameworks and tools. These helped me in analysing experimental and market research data as well as undertake scenario planning exercises.
