Professional Experience:
Dr. Geetanjali Kapoor is a physician-scientist, microbiologist, and global health leader with more than 20 years of experience spanning clinical medicine, infectious diseases, microbiology, public health, health systems strengthening, antimicrobial resistance (AMR), and global health policy. Her career has evolved from clinical and laboratory practice to leadership roles in international public health, enabling her to bridge technical expertise, research, program implementation, and policy engagement.
Dr. Kapoor began her career in clinical microbiology and infectious diseases, establishing microbiology laboratory services and infection prevention and control (IPC) programs in healthcare settings. She has extensive experience in laboratory diagnostics, quality management, antimicrobial stewardship, healthcare-associated infection prevention, and clinical consultation. Her early professional experience involved strengthening laboratory systems, supervising multidisciplinary teams, and supporting healthcare institutions in improving quality of care and patient safety.
Over the course of her career, she has worked extensively with governments, academic institutions, hospitals, public health laboratories, international organizations, and development partners across Asia, Africa, and the Middle East. Her expertise encompasses infectious disease surveillance, outbreak preparedness and response, AMR surveillance, health policy development, capacity building, implementation research, and health systems strengthening. She has led and managed complex national and multi-country programs and has contributed to the design and implementation of policies and strategies addressing infectious diseases and antimicrobial resistance.
From 2019 to 2022, Dr. Kapoor served as the Antimicrobial Resistance Focal Point for the Fleming Fund Regional Grant in Africa, leading efforts to assess AMR prevalence and strengthen surveillance systems across 14 African countries. In this role, she coordinated multidisciplinary teams, engaged with ministries of health, laboratories, and regional stakeholders, and supported the translation of surveillance data into policy and practice.
Her experience also includes technical support to the World Health Organization (WHO) in India and Kuwait, contributing to infection prevention and control guidelines, AMR action plans, HIV and hepatitis programs, and health security initiatives. She currently serves as Acting Head of One Health Trust, providing strategic leadership for research, policy, and capacity-building initiatives in infectious diseases, antimicrobial resistance, and One Health.
In addition to her programmatic and policy leadership, Dr. Kapoor is actively engaged in academia. She serves as a Visiting Academic with the University of Oxford and contributes as a faculty member to its postgraduate diploma programme in Global Health, mentoring and teaching professionals from diverse international backgrounds. Her academic contributions reflect her commitment to translating evidence into practice and strengthening the next generation of global health leaders.
Dr. Kapoor also serves on international advisory groups, including the WHO Bacterial Priority Pathogens List Advisory Group and the Strategic Advisory Board of the Joint Programming Initiative on Antimicrobial Resistance (JPIAMR). She has authored and co-authored numerous influential publications, including the State of the World’s Antibiotics Report, technical guidance documents, and book chapters on AMR surveillance and infection prevention.
