Project Background:
Cancer is an increasingly serious public health concern in India, including Himachal Pradesh. India reports a high cancer burden, with over a million new cases and hundreds of thousands of deaths annually, and notable regional variations in incidence. The most common cancers among men include oral and lung cancers, while breast and cervical cancers are predominant among women. In Himachal Pradesh, around 8,500 cases are reported each year, though many remain undetected in remote, rural areas where nearly 90% of the population resides. Despite relatively strong overall health indicators, rising cancer incidence—linked to tobacco use, lifestyle factors, environmental exposures, and genetics—poses a major challenge. Limited healthcare access, low awareness, and cultural barriers often lead to late diagnosis, especially for breast and cervical cancers among women. Strengthening early detection through accessible and community-based screening programs is essential to improving outcomes and reducing the cancer burden in the state.

The project aims to establish a cancer screening program for early detection of breast and cervical cancers among females aged greater than or equal to 30years and to evaluate the feasibility & effectiveness of a systematic screening approach at the peripheral level, with potential for wider implementation by
