ROLE SUMMARY MANT seeks a hands-on, field-oriented Project Coordinator to lead day-to-day delivery of a 24-month climate justice initiative with Santhal communities in Purulia. The role combines implementation leadership, inclusive community facilitation, government liaison, team coordination, monitoring and donor reporting, and responsible budget management.

About MANT
Manbhum Ananda Ashram Nityananda Trust (MANT) is an Indian non-profit organisation working with marginalised rural and tribal communities through programmes in public health, education, livelihoods, research, environmental resilience and community media. Established in 1960, MANT has its registered office in Laulara, Purulia, and a communication and liaison office in Kolkata. Learn more at www.mant.org.in.

Job purpose
The Project Coordinator will translate the approved logic model and budget into coordinated field action and ensure that all activities are delivered on time, within budget and to the required quality. The postholder will be the main operational link among communities, the project team, technical specialists, MANT management, government stakeholders and the donor reporting process.

Key responsibilities

1. Project planning and implementation
  • Convert the approved logic model and budget into annual, quarterly and monthly workplans, activity calendars, responsibility matrices, procurement schedules and expenditure forecasts.
  • Coordinate timely delivery across all project streams: climate education, gender and shared norms, community media, Village Climate Resilience Plans, adaptation demonstrations, policy engagement and partnerships.
  • Maintain active field coordination across 50 villages and eight Gram Sabha clusters; identify dependencies, resolve operational problems and escalate material risks promptly.
  • Coordinate activity logistics, permissions, facilitators, technical assessments, materials, venues, travel and community contributions, while tracking milestones and corrective actions against the approved schedule.
2. Community engagement, gender and inclusion
  • Work through Gram Sabhas, Climate Action Teams, women's self-help groups, youth clubs, elders, farmers and other community institutions to build ownership and participation.
  • Use participatory and culturally appropriate methods, including communication in Santali and Bengali, community mapping, seasonal calendars, problem ranking, storytelling and practical demonstrations.
  • Mainstream gender and inclusion through safe-space consultations, gender-sensitive scheduling, shared decision-making, visible leadership roles for women, equitable access and appropriately disaggregated participation data.
  • Facilitate the preparation, Gram Sabha endorsement and six-monthly review of Village Climate Resilience Plans, including clear actions, roles, timelines and resource needs.
3. Government liaison, advocacy and partnerships
  • Build constructive working relationships with Panchayats and block- and district-level departments responsible for agriculture, water, forestry, health, tribal welfare and related schemes.
  • Coordinate community preparation for and delivery of multi-stakeholder climate forums, ensuring inclusive representation, clear agendas, bilingual briefs, accurate minutes and tracked commitments.
  • Support the evidence gathering, drafting, validation, endorsement and submission of policy briefs, Gram Sabha resolutions and community proposals to relevant authorities.
  • Follow up government responses, scheme linkages, sanction orders and budget allocations; communicate progress to Gram Sabhas; and help activate or formalise partnerships and MoUs that can sustain successful initiatives.
4. Team leadership and coordination
  • Provide day-to-day direction and support to the Community Mobilisers and coordinate closely with the Gender and Training Specialist, Community Media Producer, peer educators, consultants and technical experts.
  • Set clear priorities, conduct review meetings, support field problem-solving and staff capacity, and coordinate with the Programme Director and MANT support teams so plans, budgets and reporting remain aligned.
  • Promote a respectful, collaborative and accountable work culture and ensure that staff and partners comply with MANT policies and the code of conduct.
5. Monitoring, learning, reporting and communication
  • Maintain an accurate project MIS and results tracker covering activities, participants, reach, output targets, outcome indicators, timelines, responsibilities and follow-up actions.
  • Coordinate pre- and post-assessments, periodic field monitoring, community feedback and follow-up on behaviour, practice and institutional changes linked to the project's outcomes.
  • Ensure timely collection and secure filing of supporting evidence, and prepare high-quality updates and donor narrative reports on activities, outcomes, challenges, adaptations, gender mainstreaming, learning and communications.
  • Coordinate documentation and dissemination of Santali radio and video outputs, ensuring community voice, women's representation, factual accuracy, informed consent and safeguarding.
  • Support reviews, evaluations, audits and learning events, and use findings and community feedback to improve subsequent implementation.
6. Budget, administration and compliance
  • Manage activities within the approved budget, review expenditure against workplans, prepare forecasts and flag potential underspend, overspend or reallocation needs early.
  • Work with the finance team to ensure requests, procurements, payments, transaction records and supporting documents are complete, accurate, appropriately approved and correctly allocated.
  • Contribute to financial reporting by reconciling activity delivery with expenditure and providing clear explanations for material variances, including variances above the donor's 10% explanation threshold.
  • Maintain orderly physical and digital project files and ensure compliance with donor requirements, organisational policies, safeguarding, data protection, anti-fraud and audit readiness.

      Qualifications and experience

Essential
  • Postgraduate degree in Social Work, Rural Development, Mass Communication and Journalism, Development Studies, Environmental Studies, Natural Resource Management, Agriculture, Public Policy or a related discipline.
  • At least three years of relevant experience coordinating field-based development projects; five years and/or experience with donor-funded programmes will be an advantage.
  • Demonstrated experience working with rural, tribal, or Adivasi communities and community institutions such as Gram Sabhas, Panchayats, self-help groups or village committees.
  • Practical experience in project planning, team coordination, stakeholder management, budget tracking, monitoring and donor-quality narrative reporting.
  • Working knowledge of climate adaptation, climate-smart agriculture, water conservation, disaster preparedness, natural resource management, or closely related rural development themes.
  • Strong written and spoken Bengali and English. Ability to communicate in Santali is strongly preferred and will be a significant advantage.
  • Competence with spreadsheets, word processing, presentations, email, shared drives, and basic project data or MIS tools.
  • Willingness and ability to travel frequently and work in remote rural locations across Purulia district.
Desirable
  • Prior work in Purulia or a strong understanding of the social, cultural, and governance context of Santhal communities in the region.
  • Experience with gender-transformative or gender-responsive facilitation, especially with women, men, and youth in mixed and safe-space settings.
  • Experience supporting community media, participatory video, radio programming, evidence-based advocacy, or policy engagement.
  • Experience linking community plans to government schemes and tracking resolutions, proposals, sanction orders, or MoUs.
Skills and competencies
  • Strong planning, organisation, initiative, and follow-through across multiple activities and locations.
  • Participatory facilitation, community mobilisation and culturally respectful communication.
  • Team leadership, coaching, collaboration and constructive conflict resolution.
  • Clear analytical writing, accurate documentation and confident verbal presentation.
  • Sound numerical sense, financial stewardship and attention to compliance and detail.
  • Adaptability and calm problem-solving in field conditions and under deadlines.
  • Commitment to climate justice, gender equality, social inclusion and community-led development.
