SLD is a labour rights and support organisation dedicated to advancing dignity, equity and justice for workers in India's informal economy and global supply chains. Established in 2006, SLD works with women workers, migrant workers and other vulnerable labour communities to promote labour rights, gender justice, sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR), and collective empowerment through grassroots organising, research, policy advocacy, legal support, leadership development, and awareness building. With physical offices in seven states and partnerships with like-minded organisations across India, SLD fosters social dialogue and supports workers in sectors including garment, leather, seafood, and domestic work.

Position Type: Consultant (Full-time)
 
Contract Period – 1 year, 6 months’ performance review

As SLD enters its next phase of growth, we are looking for a creative and strategic communications professional to build our public profile, strengthen donor engagement and position SLD as a thought leader in labour rights and gender-transformative development.
 
Position Summary
 
The Consultant – Communications, Branding, and Engagement will lead SLD's external communications and brand strategy. The role will be responsible for translating complex programme work into compelling stories, campaigns and knowledge products that engage donors, brands, policymakers, media and the wider public.
 
The successful candidate will combine storytelling, digital communications, strategic marketing and visual branding to increase SLD's visibility and support organisational fundraising and advocacy goals.  
 
Key Responsibilities
 
1. Brand Strategy & Positioning  
  • Develop and implement SLD's communication and branding strategy.
  • Strengthen SLD's identity as a leading labour rights organisation.
  • Ensure consistency across all communication materials.
  • Develop brand guidelines and messaging frameworks.
  • Manage SLD's visual identity.  
2. Strategic Communications 
 
Lead development of:  
  • Annual reports
  • Impact reports
  • Newsletters
  • Programme briefs
  • Donor updates
  • Case studies
  • Opinion pieces
  • Website content
  • Campaign materials
  • Corporate presentations
  • Advocacy publications  
Translate technical programme work into accessible and engaging communication products.
 
3. Digital Marketing & Social Media 
 
Manage and grow SLD's digital presence.
 
Responsibilities include:  
  • LinkedIn strategy
  • Instagram
  • Facebook
  • YouTube
  • Website management
  • Email campaigns
  • Analytics
  • SEO
  • Content calendars  
4. Storytelling & Documentation 
 
Work closely with programme teams to capture:  
  • Worker stories
  • Photo essays
  • Videos
  • Podcasts
  • Testimonials
  • Impact journeys
  • Community innovations  
Develop ethical storytelling practices that centre workers' voices and dignity.
 
5. Fundraising Communications 
 
Support the fundraising team by developing:  
  • Donor presentations
  • Concept notes
  • Pitch decks
  • Impact narratives
  • CSR communication materials
  • Proposal visuals
  • Partnership brochures  
Develop communication assets that strengthen donor engagement and resource mobilisation.
 
6. Media & Public Engagement  
  • Build relationships with journalists.
  • Coordinate media interactions.
  • Draft press releases.
  • Organise public events and campaigns.
  • Support conference communications.  
Desired Outcomes (First 12 Months)
 
The successful candidate will:  
  • Develop SLD's communication strategy.
  • Refresh SLD's brand identity.
  • Increase SLD's digital engagement.
  • Produce a strong annual report and impact report.
  • Develop a library of high-quality worker stories.
  • Strengthen donor communication materials.
  • Launch regular newsletters.
  • Improve website content and user experience.  
  • Position SLD staff as thought leaders through articles, blogs and speaking opportunities.  
Required Qualifications  
  • Master's degree in Communications, Journalism, Marketing, Development Studies or related field.
  • 5–8 years of relevant experience.
  • Experience in the development sector, social impact, labour rights, gender, human rights or public policy preferred.  
Skills & Competencies  
  • Excellent writing and editing skills.
  • Strong storytelling ability.
  • Strategic thinking.
  • Branding and marketing expertise.
  • Digital communications.
  • Graphic design sensibility.
  • Photography and video documentation.
  • Social media strategy.
  • Website content management.
  • Familiarity with Canva, Adobe Creative Suite (or similar), and content management systems.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with programme teams.

What We Are Looking For
 
We are looking for someone who can help SLD move beyond communicating activities to communicating influence. The ideal candidate should be equally comfortable interviewing a woman worker in a garment cluster, designing a campaign for International Women's Day, preparing a donor pitch deck, writing an op-ed on labour rights, and advising the leadership team on organisational positioning.  
 
Remuneration
 
Given SLD’s current organisational size and financial context:
  • Salary band: 65,000 – 70,000 per month 
  • The exact offer will depend on experience, role fit, and internal equity considerations.
