1. Organisation Background
United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) is the lead United Nations agency working towards a world where every pregnancy is wanted, every childbirth is safe, and every young person's potential is fulfilled. Guided by human rights principles, UNFPA’s work focuses on four strategic outcomes: (i) ending preventable maternal deaths, (ii) ending unmet need for family planning, and (iii) ending gender-based violence and harmful practices, and (iv) strengthening demographic resilience through evidence-based responses to population dynamics and demographic change. Across all its interventions, UNFPA places women, adolescents, young people, and older persons at the centre, with a strong emphasis on gender equality, bodily autonomy, dignity, and rights across the life course.
The UNFPA Strategic Plan 2026-2029 places normative and upstream engagement at the core of achieving transformative results. The Strategic Plan recognises population dynamics, including ageing, longevity, and intergenerational equity, as critical entry points for sustainable development. In this context, focused engagement on demographic intelligence, healthy ageing, care systems, and the rights of older persons and persons with disabilities is central to UNFPA's mandate of supporting countries to harness the demographic dividend and prepare for demographic transitions.
In Odisha, UNFPA has a long-standing partnership with various departments of the Government of Odisha, supporting evidence-based policymaking, system strengthening, capacity building, and innovation across health, gender, youth, and social development sectors. UNFPA works closely with state institutions to address structural and social determinants that influence population dynamics, gender relations, access to services, and the realisation of rights, particularly for women, adolescents, older persons, persons with disabilities, and marginalised communities.
