1. Introduction
Jagatpur village, under Narigwara Gram Panchayat of Karanjiya Block, Dindori District, is a predominantly tribal and hilly area where communities depend largely on local natural water sources for their drinking water requirements.
To improve access to safe, adequate, and sustainable drinking water, WaterAid Dindori proposes to develop a Spring and Dugwell Based Piped Water Supply Scheme (PWSS) covering 154 families.
Under the proposed intervention, two perennial spring sources and one existing dugwell will be integrated into a piped water supply system. The springs will be protected through appropriate source development measures, including construction of a spring box and filter/collection tank. The dugwell will also be utilized as an additional water source to strengthen the overall water supply system.
Water from the identified sources will be collected and conveyed through a piped network to a 10 KL Overhead Tank (OHT). From the OHT, water will be distributed to the community through a dedicated pipeline network and public tap stands.
The proposed system will also include greywater management through leach pits and appropriate drinking water disinfection through an auto-chlorination system.
2. Need for the Intervention
The community of Jagatpur depends on natural springs and dugwells for drinking water. Although these sources provide an important water supply, the absence of adequate source protection, storage, treatment, and distribution infrastructure can affect the reliability and safety of drinking water.
The hilly terrain and scattered settlement pattern also make it difficult for community members to access water conveniently, particularly during periods of high demand and seasonal variations in water availability.
Women and children may have to spend significant time and effort collecting water from available sources. There is therefore a need to develop the existing water sources into a reliable, protected and community-managed piped water supply system.
The proposed intervention will integrate multiple local water sources, improve source protection, provide adequate storage, and establish a systematic distribution network for the community.
3. Project Objective
The main objective of the project is to provide safe, adequate, reliable and sustainable drinking water to 154 families of Jagatpur village by developing and integrating two spring sources and one dugwell into a piped water supply system.
Specific Objectives
- To develop and protect two existing spring sources.
- To utilize the existing dugwell as an additional water source.
- To improve the collection and filtration of spring water.
- To establish a reliable piped water supply system for the village.
- To provide adequate water storage through a 10 KL Overhead Tank.
- To improve accessibility to drinking water through public tap stands.
- To introduce appropriate water disinfection and chlorination measures.
- To promote proper management of greywater through leach pits.
- To strengthen community participation in operation and maintenance.
- To improve long-term drinking water security for the tribal community.
4. Proposed Intervention
A. Spring Source Protection
The two identified spring sources will be developed and protected to ensure safe and sustainable collection of spring water.
The proposed works include:
- Construction of a suitable RCC Spring Box.
- Protection of the spring catchment and immediate source area.
- Prevention of contamination from surface runoff and external activities.
- Improvement of the source surroundings for cleanliness and safety.
- Provision of a suitable collection arrangement for spring water.
B. Filter and Collection Tank
A RCC Filter Collection Tank will be constructed to collect and provide initial filtration/settling of water from the spring sources before it enters the distribution system.
The tank will help in improving the quality of collected spring water and facilitate controlled conveyance towards the storage system.
C. Dugwell Development
The existing dugwell will be incorporated into the PWSS as an additional source of water.
Necessary arrangements will be made for:
- Safe withdrawal of water from the dugwell.
- Protection of the source from contamination.
- Connection of the dugwell to the water supply system.
- Installation of required pumping and rising-main arrangements.
- Regular monitoring and maintenance of the water source.
D. Water Storage – 10 KL OHT
A 10 KL Overhead Tank will be constructed/installed to provide adequate storage of collected water.
The OHT will help in:
- Maintaining a regular water supply.
- Balancing fluctuations in source discharge and demand.
- Providing adequate storage during peak consumption periods.
- Facilitating distribution through the village pipeline network.
E. Piped Water Distribution Network
A dedicated piped water distribution network will be developed to convey water from the sources to the OHT and subsequently to the community.
As per the technical estimate, the proposed works include approximately:
- 900 metres of main pipeline/trenching
- 1,600 metres of distribution pipeline
- Required HDPE/PE pipes and fittings.
- Approximately 325 metres of rising main from the source towards the OHT.
- Necessary plumbing, joints, valves and associated accessories.
The final alignment of the pipeline will be finalized according to the site conditions and community settlement pattern.
F. Tap Stands and Water Access Points
Approximately 14 public tap stand/platforms are proposed at suitable locations within the habitation.
These water access points will be planned in consultation with the Gram Panchayat and community to ensure equitable and convenient access to drinking water.
G. Greywater Management
Approximately 5 leach pits will be constructed for the management of wastewater generated around the tap stands.
The leach pits will help to:
- Prevent stagnant water around tap stands.
- Improve village sanitation and hygiene.
- Facilitate localized groundwater recharge.
- Promote decentralized greywater management.
H. Water Quality and Chlorination
Water quality testing will be undertaken to ensure that the supplied water is suitable for drinking.
An automatic chlorination system will also be installed to support regular disinfection of the water supply. Chlorine residual will be monitored using an appropriate water quality testing kit.
5. Beneficiary Coverage
The proposed PWSS will directly benefit:
154 Families of Jagatpur Village
The intervention will particularly benefit women, children and elderly persons by reducing the distance, time and physical effort required to collect drinking water.
6. Expected Outcomes
The proposed intervention is expected to achieve the following outcomes:
- 154 families will have improved access to safe and reliable drinking water.
- Two spring sources will be protected and developed for drinking water supply.
- The existing dugwell will be integrated into the village water supply system.
- A sustainable multi-source PWSS will be established.
- Adequate water storage will be ensured through the 10 KL OHT.
- Access to drinking water will improve through strategically located tap stands.
- Water quality will be improved through filtration and chlorination.
- Greywater management will be strengthened through leach pits.
- Dependence on distant and potentially unsafe water sources will be reduced.
- Time and effort spent by women and children on water collection will be reduced.
- Community ownership and responsibility for the water supply system will be strengthened.
7. Community Participation and Operation & Maintenance
Community participation will be an integral part of the project. The Gram Panchayat and community members will be involved in planning, implementation, monitoring and operation and maintenance of the PWSS.
Community members will be oriented on:
- Protection and cleanliness of spring sources.
- Dugwell protection and maintenance.
- Safe use of tap stands.
- Regular cleaning of the OHT.
- Pipeline maintenance and prevention of leakage.
- Chlorination and drinking water quality monitoring.
- Greywater management.
- Reporting of technical faults.
- Community-based operation and maintenance of the system.
The responsibility for regular operation and maintenance will be developed at the village level in coordination with the Gram Panchayat and relevant community institutions.
8. Sustainability of the Intervention
The proposed intervention follows a multi-source and sustainable water security approach by integrating two springs and one dugwell into a single piped water supply system.
The protection of natural spring sources and the dugwell will help improve source sustainability. The 10 KL OHT will provide storage capacity, while the piped distribution network will ensure better access to water.
Water quality management, greywater disposal and community-based operation and maintenance will further contribute to the long-term sustainability of the intervention.
The project will also promote community ownership and local responsibility for protecting water sources and maintaining the infrastructure.

10. Estimated Project Cost
As per the technical estimate, the proposed project includes spring box construction, filter collection tank, pipeline and plumbing works, tap stand platforms, leach pits, 10 KL OHT and auto-chlorination system.
Estimated Project Cost: Approximately INR 11.95 lakh including GST.
The final project cost shall be as per the approved technical estimate and actual site requirements.
11. Conclusion
The proposed Spring and Dugwell Based Piped Water Supply Scheme in Jagatpur village is a comprehensive intervention aimed at improving drinking water security for 154 families.
By integrating two spring sources and one dugwell with source protection, filtration and collection infrastructure, a 10 KL OHT, piped distribution network, public tap stands, greywater management and water quality measures, the project will establish a more reliable and sustainable drinking water system.
The intervention will reduce the community's dependence on distant and unsafe water sources, improve access to safe drinking water, reduce the time and effort required for water collection, and strengthen community ownership and operation and maintenance of the system.
