CONCEPT NOTE
Gravity-Based Spring Pipe Water Supply Scheme (GSPWSS)
Village: Mohdi
Gram Panchayat: Mohadi
Block: Pushprajgarh
District: Anuppur, Madhya Pradesh
Implementing Agency: WaterAid
Beneficiary Households: 53 Households
Water Sources: Karanar Spring and Dumar Jhiriya Spring
Proposed System: Gravity-Based Pipe Water Supply Scheme
1. Background
Mohdi village of Mohadi Gram Panchayat, Pushprajgarh Block, Anuppur District, is a rural and hilly area where access to a reliable and sustainable drinking water supply remains a challenge. The village has naturally available spring water sources, namely Karanar Spring and Dumar Jhiriya Spring, which have the potential to provide a sustainable source of drinking water for the community.
At present, the available water sources are not adequately developed and connected to a systematic household water supply system. The community therefore faces difficulties in accessing safe and reliable drinking water, particularly during periods of increased water demand.
To address this issue, WaterAid proposes to develop a Gravity-Based Spring Pipe Water Supply Scheme using the available spring sources.
2. Proposed Intervention
WaterAid will support the development of a gravity-based PWSS by capturing and protecting water from the Karanar Spring and Dumar Jhiriya Spring and conveying the collected water through a pipeline system.
The proposed system will include:
- Construction of 2** RCC Spring Boxes** for source protection and collection.
- Construction of 1 Filter Collection Tank for preliminary filtration and collection of spring water.
- Laying of an appropriate HDPE pipeline network for conveyance and distribution of water.
- Construction of a 10 KL Overhead Tank (OHT) for storage and regulated distribution.
- Development of 16 tap stand platforms at suitable locations for community access.
- Construction of 16 soak pits for safe management of wastewater generated from tap stands.
- Installation of an automatic chlorination system to support safe drinking water supply.
- Necessary plumbing, fittings, valves and associated works for proper functioning of the system.
The system will utilize the natural elevation difference of the hilly terrain to convey water through gravity wherever technically feasible, thereby reducing dependence on electricity and recurring energy costs.
3. Beneficiary Coverage
The proposed PWSS will benefit approximately 53 households of Mohdi village. The intervention will improve access to a more reliable and safer drinking water supply for the targeted households and community.
4. Objectives
The key objectives of the proposed intervention are:
- To provide a reliable and sustainable drinking water supply to 53 households.
- To develop and protect the existing Karanar and Dumar Jhiriya spring sources.
- To utilize natural spring water through a gravity-based water supply system.
- To reduce the dependence of households on distant and seasonal water sources.
- To improve the quality and safety of drinking water through filtration and chlorination.
- To strengthen community participation in the operation and maintenance of the PWSS.
- To promote long-term sustainability of the water source and drinking water infrastructure.

6. Expected Outcomes
The proposed intervention is expected to result in:
- Improved access to safe and reliable drinking water for 53 households.
- Better protection and utilization of the Karanar and Dumar Jhiriya springs.
- Reduced time and effort spent by community members in collecting drinking water.
- Improved drinking water quality through filtration and chlorination.
- Improved hygiene around community water points through proper drainage and soak pits.
- Reduced dependency on energy-intensive water supply systems through gravity-based conveyance.
- Strengthened community ownership and participation in the operation and maintenance of the water supply system.
- Improved sustainability of the drinking water system through source protection and appropriate infrastructure.
7. Sustainability and Community Participation
The sustainability of the PWSS will depend on regular operation and maintenance of the spring sources, pipelines, storage tank, tap stands and other infrastructure. WaterAid will promote community participation and coordination with the Gram Panchayat and Village Water and Sanitation Committee (VWSC) for the management and maintenance of the system.
The community will be encouraged to take responsibility for:
- Protection and cleanliness of the spring sources.
- Regular monitoring of water availability.
- Minor maintenance of tap stands and pipelines.
- Proper use of the water supply infrastructure.
- Monitoring of water quality and chlorine residual.
- Ensuring proper functioning and maintenance of the system.
8. Conclusion
The proposed Gravity-Based Spring Pipe Water Supply Scheme in Mohdi village will provide a sustainable drinking water solution by utilizing the naturally available Karanar and Dumar Jhiriya spring sources. The intervention will combine source protection, spring water collection, filtration, storage, gravity-based conveyance, distribution infrastructure and water quality management.
Through this intervention, 53 households will benefit from improved access to safe and reliable drinking water. The project will also strengthen community ownership and contribute to the long-term sustainability of drinking water services in Mohdi village.
