IHAT PURPOSE AND PRIORITIES
India Health Action Trust was instituted in 2003 as a Charitable Trust with a vision to meaningfully impact the lives of vulnerable and marginalised people by addressing health and social inequities. The Trust is working towards reducing inequities by developing comprehensive and sustainable programmes to improve population health. Since its inception, IHAT has working closely with the Government of India and state governments, including Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Delhi and Bihar to achieve public health goals. Our work is focused in areas of prevention and control of HIV and Tuberculosis, in achieving significant improvements in Reproductive, Maternal, Neonatal and Child Health, improved Nutrition among mothers and children, and strengthening health systems. We use program science to optimise and scale public health programs while partnering with the governments and communities.
ROLE PURPOSE
The position will support the Government of Uttar Pradesh (GoUP) in strengthening nursing competencies and improving the quality of nursing care across public health facilities through competency-based training, mentoring, and competency assessments. The Specialist/Team Leader – Nursing will provide nursing expertise to support UP TSU’s technical assistance to the Department of Medical Health in policy and guideline development and capacity-building initiatives. The position will also build the capacity of UP TSU field personnel to provide on-the-job mentoring to in-service nurses.
DIMENSIONS
- Support the development of policies, guidelines, and SOPs to strengthen nursing care in public sector health facilities.
- Build the capacity of nurses and Nurse Mentors across the state.
- Serve as UPTSU’s technical point of contact for the Office of the Director (Nursing).
- Coordinate with NHM-UP, relevant directorates, training institutions, the State Nursing Council, and development partners.
- Coordinate across UPTSU verticals to align and leverage efforts to strengthen nursing care.
- Assess training needs and define the competencies expected to deliver compassionate and respectful clinical care
- Develop and revise competency-based training curricula, modules and learning materials for nurses and Nurse Mentors
- Strengthen on-site mentoring, including the use of skill labs, simulation and competency assessment
- Support in strengthening quality improvement initiatives at the directorate and facilitate rollout in facilities in coordination with nurses and districts
- Provide technical supervision to TSU's field nursing staff, including joint facility visits
- Prepare policy notes, concept notes, presentations and other documents as required
- Provide inputs to annual planning and budgeting for nursing capacity building and mentoring
- Review national guidelines and the experience of other states, and bring relevant evidence into state policy
- Monitor implementation through program data and facility-level observations, identify gaps and use findings to strengthen training, mentoring, nursing practice and policy
- Document good practices and contribute to reports and knowledge products
- Any other work given by the line manager or organization from time to time
QUALIFICATIONS
Essential:
- M.Sc. Nursing or
- B.Sc. Nursing with a Master’s in Public Health or Hospital/Health Administration or equivalent
Preferred:
- Specialization in Obstetrics and Gynecology, Pediatrics/Neonatology or Community Health Nursing is preferred
- Experience of working as faculty at nursing college is preferred
- Certification as a trainer or assessor under national maternal and newborn health or quality programs is preferred
EXPERIENCE
- Essential: 5-7 years of post-qualification experience, including clinical experience in maternal and newborn care, experience in training or mentoring nurses, and experience of working with a state health department or NHM on guidelines, policy or program design
- Preferred: Experience working within the public health system in Uttar Pradesh or a comparable state is preferred.
