CONCEPT NOTE
Dug well Based Piped Water Supply Scheme (PWSS)
Village: Bital Bahara
Gram Panchayat: Khamha
Block: Samnapur
District: Dindori, Madhya Pradesh
Implementing Organization: WaterAid, Dindori
Target Beneficiaries: 81 Baiga Tribal Families
1. Introduction
Bital Bahara village, located under Khamha Gram Panchayat of Samnapur Block, Dindori District, is predominantly inhabited by the Baiga tribal community. To improve access to safe, adequate, and sustainable drinking water, WaterAid Dindori proposes to develop a Dugwell Based Piped Water Supply Scheme (PWSS) in the village.
Under the proposed intervention, the existing dugwell will be developed and protected as a reliable drinking water source. Necessary source protection measures will be undertaken to prevent contamination and ensure the safe utilization of groundwater.
A 3 HP solar-powered submersible pump will be installed to lift water from the dugwell. The pumped water will be stored in an approximately 10 KL Overhead Tank (OHT) and subsequently supplied to the community through a piped distribution network and public tap stands.
The proposed intervention will directly benefit 81 Baiga tribal families by improving their access to safe and reliable drinking water.
2. Need for the Intervention
The community in Bital Bahara is dependent on local water sources for its drinking water requirements. During the summer season, reduced water availability and increased demand can create significant challenges for the community.
The existing dugwell also requires appropriate protection and improvement to reduce the risk of contamination from surface runoff, open surroundings, and other external sources.
In addition, the absence of a reliable piped water distribution system may require community members, particularly women and children, to spend considerable time collecting and carrying water.
Therefore, there is a need to strengthen the existing water source through dugwell protection, solar-powered water lifting, storage, and piped water distribution.
3. Project Objective
The primary objective of the project is to provide safe, adequate, reliable, and sustainable drinking water to 81 Baiga tribal families of Bital Bahara village.
Specific Objectives
- To protect and improve the existing dugwell as a sustainable drinking water source.
- To install a 3 HP solar-powered submersible pump for water lifting.
- To promote the use of renewable solar energy for drinking water supply.
- To establish an approximately 10 KL water storage system.
- To develop a piped water distribution network for the beneficiary households/community.
- To provide convenient access to drinking water through public tap stands.
- To promote proper management of wastewater generated from tap stands.
- To strengthen community participation in the operation and maintenance of the water supply system.
- To improve the long-term sustainability of the village drinking water system.
4. Proposed Intervention
The following major activities are proposed under the project:
A. Dugwell Protection and Source Development
The existing dugwell will be strengthened and protected through appropriate civil works, including:
- Construction of necessary protection measures around the dugwell.
- Construction of a parapet/protection wall around the water source.
- Provision of a suitable and safe MS cover for the dugwell.
- Construction of a drinking water platform around the source.
- Improvement of the surrounding area to prevent contamination and maintain cleanliness.
- Measures to protect the water source from surface runoff and external contamination.
B. Solar-Powered Pumping System
A solar-based pumping system will be established to ensure sustainable water lifting from the dugwell.
The proposed system will include:
- 3 HP solar submersible pump.
- Solar PV modules.
- Solar MPPT/VFD controller.
- Required DC cables and connectors.
- Suitable GI/MS mounting structure for solar panels.
- Required electrical safety and earthing arrangements.
The solar-powered system will help reduce dependence on conventional electricity and recurring energy costs.
C. Water Storage System
An approximately 10 KL Overhead Tank (OHT) will be installed/constructed for storage of pumped water.
The OHT will facilitate:
- Adequate water storage.
- Regular water supply to the community.
- Gravity-based distribution wherever technically feasible.
- Better management of peak drinking water demand.
D. Piped Water Distribution Network
A piped water distribution system will be developed to convey water from the dugwell/OHT to the community.
The proposed infrastructure includes:
- Approximately 800 metres of main pipeline.
- Approximately 1,300 metres of distribution pipeline.
- HDPE/PE pipes and necessary fittings.
- Required plumbing and connection works.
E. Tap Stands and Drinking Water Platforms
Approximately 19 public tap stands/platforms will be developed at suitable locations to provide convenient access to drinking water for the community.
The locations will be finalized in consultation with the Gram Panchayat and community to ensure equitable access.
F. Greywater Management
Approximately 19 leach pits will be constructed near the tap stands for proper disposal and management of greywater.
This will help to:
- Prevent water stagnation.
- Maintain cleanliness around tap stands.
- Improve local groundwater recharge.
- Promote decentralized greywater management.
G. Water Quality and Chlorination
- Water quality testing will be undertaken to ensure that the supplied water is safe for drinking.
- An auto chlorinator is also proposed to support appropriate disinfection of the drinking water supply and maintain water quality.
5. Target Beneficiaries
The project will directly benefit:
81 Baiga tribal families of Bital Bahara village.
The intervention is expected to particularly benefit women, children, and elderly community members by reducing the time and physical effort required to collect water from distant or unsafe sources.
6. Expected Outcomes
The proposed intervention is expected to achieve the following outcomes:
- 81 Baiga tribal families will gain improved access to safe and reliable drinking water.
- The existing dugwell will be protected and developed as a safer water source.
- A sustainable solar-powered drinking water system will be established.
- Dependence on unsafe or distant water sources will be reduced.
- The time and effort spent by women and children in collecting water will be reduced.
- Access to drinking water within the village will be improved.
- Proper greywater management will reduce stagnant water and unhygienic conditions.
- Improved water source protection will contribute to long-term water security.
- Community participation in operation and maintenance of the system will be strengthened.
7. Community Participation and Operation & Maintenance
Community participation will be an important component of the proposed intervention. The Gram Panchayat and community members will be involved in planning, implementation, monitoring, and operation and maintenance of the water supply system.
Community members will be oriented on:
- Protection and cleanliness of the dugwell.
- Safe operation of the solar pumping system.
- Maintenance of pipelines and tap stands.
- Regular cleaning of the OHT.
- Drinking water quality and chlorination.
- Identification and reporting of leakages and minor technical problems.
- Community-based operation and maintenance of the water supply system.
The responsibility for regular operation and maintenance will be established at the village level in coordination with the Gram Panchayat and relevant community institutions.
8. Sustainability of the Intervention
The proposed system integrates source protection, solar-powered pumping, water storage, piped distribution, and greywater management to create a sustainable drinking water solution for the village.
The use of solar energy will reduce dependence on conventional electricity and help minimize recurring energy expenditure. Protection of the dugwell will improve the safety and longevity of the water source.
Community ownership and regular operation and maintenance will further contribute to the long-term sustainability of the system.
9. Conclusion
- The proposed Dugwell Based Piped Water Supply Scheme in Bital Bahara village is an important intervention to improve drinking water security for the Baiga tribal community.
- By protecting the existing dugwell and integrating it with a 3 HP solar-powered pumping system, water storage, piped distribution, tap stands, greywater management, and water quality measures, the project will provide a more reliable and sustainable drinking water solution to 81 Baiga tribal families.
- The intervention will not only improve access to safe drinking water but will also promote community ownership, source protection, renewable energy use, and sustainable operation and maintenance, thereby contributing to long-term water security in Bital Bahara village.
