1. Background:
Good nutrition and health in the first 1,000 days of life—from conception to two years of age—lay the foundation for a child’s lifelong physical, cognitive, and emotional development. Minimal progress is reported in reducing under-five mortality (U5MR) from 41 (2020) to 39 (2024) per 1,000 live births, Chhattisgarh continues to report one of the highest U5MRs in India. The infant mortality rate (IMR) remains high at 36 per 1,000 live births, and the maternal mortality ratio (MMR) stands at 124 per 100,000 live births (SRS 2024).
The Government of Chhattisgarh has taken significant steps under the RMNCH+A framework, to achieve programmatic goals related to safe motherhood including improved access to emergency obstetric care, promotion of skilled birth attendance, and provision of referral transport systems. However, the delivery and uptake of community-based maternal and child nutrition services face constraints, particularly among nutritionally vulnerable women, such as those with anaemia, low body mass index (BMI), or other comorbidities. As per NFHS 5 in Chhattisgarh, 40% of women of entering reproductive phase are underweight, and 57% are anemic conditions that heighten the risk of adverse maternal and neonatal outcomes.
