ABOUT SNEHA
SNEHA (Society for Nutrition, Education and Health Action) is a Mumbai-based non-profit organization dedicated to improving the health, nutrition, and safety of women and children living in vulnerable urban informal settlements. Our mission is to empower urban women and children through integrated health and nutrition programs, education, and advocacy.

We work through a dual approach—engaging both care seekers and care providers. At the community level, we empower women and families to become agents of change, while simultaneously collaborating with public health and safety systems to drive sustainable improvements in urban health outcomes.

SNEHA’s key programs include:
• Maternal and Child Health
• Empowerment, Health and Sexuality of Adolescent
• Prevention of Violence against Women and Children
• Public System Partnership
• SNEHA Shakti
• Palliative Care
• Livelihood Generation

Between 2016 and 2025, SNEHA directly reached over 620,555 women, children, and healthcare workers, and indirectly impacted a population of over 3.63 million across seven municipal corporations and three municipal councils in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR). Today, SNEHA is a 500+ member organization with deep grassroots presence and a strong track record of reducing maternal and neonatal mortality, child malnutrition, adolescent anaemia, and gender-based violence— key determinants of health equity for families and
communities.

ABOUT THE PROGRAM
SNEHA aims to improve the health and nutrition status of married women and children in vulnerable slum communities of Mumbai with specific emphasis on the first 1000 days of life, starting from pregnancy and continuing to the child’s second birthday. This is a unique period of opportunity when the foundations of optimum health, growth, and neurodevelopment across the lifespan are established. We will follow an integrated approach addressing Planned Parenthood, maternal health, and nutrition as also the prevention of violence against women and children as these are interrelated in terms of the health status of the women and children. We will also work in collaboration with the public health and nutrition systems to improve the quality, availability, access to and uptake of services.

SNEHA’s Maternal and Child Health program seeks to improve the quality of delivery of maternal and neonatal health care in urban slums by building an accountable healthcare system as well as to empower communities to be responsible for addressing women’s and newborns’ integrated health needs.

We aim to improve the health of pregnant women and young children to enable children to develop to their full potential. We strive to break the intergenerational cycle of poor health by working across the life-stages of a woman - pre-pregnancy, pregnancy, childbirth and early childhood. The program strategies address the immediate and underlying determinants of child nutrition and early childhood development (ECD), by promoting behavior change around the child’s food, diet and care practices; strengthening access to health, nutrition and social protection services; building capacity of local community volunteers who act as peer educators to create an enabling environment for preventing malnutrition among children. Our long-standing partnership with public systems will help mainstream the child health and nutrition agenda.

ABOUT THE PROJECT
MSI Aahar – Sankalp Project MMR: The main project outcome is to improve health and nutrition of children in the age group of 0-5 years living in informal settlements of Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation, in partnership with community and system stakeholders. The focus will be on the first 1000 days of life, from conception to the child’s second birthday. This is a unique period of opportunity when the foundations of optimum health, growth, and neurodevelopment across the lifespan are established.

We will follow an integrated approach addressing maternal health, planned parenthood, child nutrition and early childhood development. We will work in collaboration with public health and nutrition systems to improve quality, availability and accessibility of services. The aim is that children (0-5 years of age) will be healthy for transition to school at the age of 5 years.

In Turbhe stores, we will be working with 5000 households, 1650 children and 1800 married women in
reproductive age (current & potential mothers) addressing malnutrition and improving maternal health and child health component. This program aims to leverage partnerships with community members, local government, and frontline workers to enhance child health and nutrition outcomes. SNEHA field office will be established as a health information center and a base for community outreach work. Activities such as anthropometry (monthly height, weight measurements for children), mobilization for immunization, and nutrition supplementation are conducted in collaboration with ICDS (Integrated Child Development Scheme) and NMMC (Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation). SNEHA’s frontline staff will conduct home visits, group meetings and community events by using behavior change communication (BCC) to achieve health outcomes.
