SPARC India (School for Potential Advancement and Restoration of Confidence) is a pioneering not-for-profit organisation committed to the empowerment and inclusion of marginalised populations, with a strong focus on Children and Persons with Disabilities (CwDs/PwDs).
Founded in 1996 by Dr. Amitabh Mehrotra, himself a person with cerebral palsy and a nationally recognised disability-rights advocate, SPARC India has built a 30-year legacy of grassroots service delivery, rehabilitation, inclusive education, community-based interventions, policy advocacy, and systemic inclusion across Lucknow and Barabanki districts of Uttar Pradesh.
About the Project
SPARC India, in technical partnership with IIT Bombay and with support from Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corporation (SMBC), is implementing an 8-month technology- and AI-driven intervention aimed at transforming the learning experience of 50 children with disabilities, including children with cerebral palsy, autism spectrum disorder, intellectual disability, and sensory impairments.
The project combines individualised assessment, assistive technology (AT) and AI-enabled learning solutions, two technology-enabled inclusive classrooms, and capacity building of 15 educators, therapists, and caregivers. The intervention also includes structured family and community engagement to promote sustainable and inclusive learning outcomes.
Purpose of the Position
The Special Educator will play a central role in translating assessment findings into meaningful educational interventions for children with disabilities.
The position will be responsible for implementing individualised learning plans, adapting curriculum and teaching-learning materials, integrating assistive and AI-enabled technologies into classroom and individual learning, supporting children in inclusive classroom settings, and working closely with families, therapists, researchers, and the technical team.
The Special Educator will also contribute to the project’s evidence-generation process by systematically documenting children’s learning progress, classroom observations, intervention outcomes, and effective inclusive practices.
Key Responsibilities
1. Individualised Education & Classroom Intervention
• Implement Individualised Education Plans (IEPs) for 50 children with disabilities in coordination with the Research Associate (Assessment & Evaluation), therapists, families, and Project Leader.
• Translate assessment findings into practical, measurable, and child-centred learning objectives.
• Plan and deliver individual and small-group educational interventions based on each child’s abilities, needs, interests, and learning pace.
• Adapt curriculum, lesson plans, classroom activities, worksheets, and teaching-learning materials to meet diverse learning needs.
• Use differentiated and multisensory teaching strategies for children with cerebral palsy, autism spectrum disorder, intellectual disability, and sensory impairments.
• Develop functional, academic, communication, social, and life-skill-oriented learning activities as appropriate to individual needs.
• Support children to participate meaningfully in inclusive classroom environments alongside their peers.
• Monitor individual learning progress and modify teaching strategies based on evidence and ongoing assessment.
2. Assistive Technology & AI-Enabled Learning
• Work closely with the IT/AT Technician and IIT Bombay technical team to identify and implement appropriate assistive technology solutions for individual learners.
• Support the assessment and matching of children with suitable AT/AI-enabled tools based on their functional and educational requirements.
• Integrate assistive technologies into classroom instruction, communication, writing, reading, mobility, and other learning activities where appropriate.
• Train children, teachers, and caregivers in the practical use of relevant assistive technology and digital learning tools.
• Observe and document the effectiveness, usability, and educational relevance of AT/AI interventions.
• Provide feedback to the technical team for refinement or adaptation of technology-based solutions.
3. IEP Implementation & Progress Monitoring
• Implement and regularly review the IEPs developed for all 50 children.
• Maintain fortnightly IEP progress-tracking records in coordination with the Research Associate (Assessment & Evaluation).
• Conduct regular classroom and individual observations to monitor learning, participation, communication, behaviour, and functional progress.
• Participate in periodic IEP review meetings with parents/caregivers, therapists, researchers, and other relevant team members.
• Identify children who are not progressing as expected and recommend modifications in teaching strategies, goals, or support requirements.
• Ensure that educational interventions remain aligned with assessment findings and measurable project outcomes.
4. Teacher & Caregiver Capacity Building
• Support the development and delivery of training sessions for teachers, educators, therapists, and caregivers on inclusive education and disability-sensitive teaching practices.
• Demonstrate practical strategies for classroom inclusion, differentiated instruction, behaviour support, communication, and participation.
• Guide teachers in adapting teaching-learning materials and classroom activities for children with disabilities.
• Support parents and caregivers in implementing appropriate educational and functional learning activities at home.
• Develop simple, practical resources and demonstration materials that teachers and caregivers can use beyond the project period.
5. Documentation, Monitoring & Reporting
• Maintain accurate records of individual sessions, classroom interventions, IEP implementation, child participation, and learning progress.
• Document case studies, success stories, challenges, and examples of effective inclusive practices.
• Contribute qualitative observations and field-level evidence to baseline, midline, and endline evaluations.
• Coordinate with the Research Associates and M&E and Data Officer to ensure timely and accurate submission of project data.
• Contribute to monthly internal reviews and bi-monthly project reviews with SMBC and IIT Bombay.
• Prepare periodic progress summaries and intervention reports as required by the Project Leader.
• Maintain confidentiality and ensure appropriate handling of children’s educational, disability, and family-related information.
6. Family & Community Engagement
• Establish regular communication with parents and caregivers regarding children’s educational progress and support needs.
• Participate in parent/caregiver feedback activities and meetings during the project.
• Help families understand the child’s strengths, learning needs, IEP goals, and appropriate use of assistive technology.
• Promote positive attitudes towards disability, inclusion, participation, and independence.
• Support community-level awareness and engagement activities related to inclusive education and technology-enabled learning.
7. Coordination & Teamwork
• Work closely with the Project Leader, Research Associates, M&E and Data Officer, Field Coordinator, IT/AT Technician, therapists, and partner institutions.
• Coordinate with IIT Bombay’s technical/research team during assessment, intervention, technology deployment, and evaluation activities.
• Participate in project review meetings and contribute professional recommendations based on field experience.
• Ensure that educational interventions are coordinated with therapy and assistive technology inputs rather than operating as separate activities.
Key Deliverables
• Educational intervention plans and adapted learning materials for 50 children.
• Implementation of 50 Individualised Education Plans (IEPs) in coordination with the assessment team.
• Regular fortnightly documentation of IEP implementation and child-wise learning progress.
• Contribution to baseline, midline, and endline assessment and evaluation processes.
• Implementation/support in technology-enabled inclusive classroom activities.
• Support in training and capacity building of 15 educators, therapists, and caregivers.
• Child-wise intervention and progress documentation.
• Case studies and qualitative evidence demonstrating changes in learning, participation, communication, and functional outcomes.
• Contribution to the final project report and joint research/knowledge outputs with IIT Bombay.

Qualifications & Experience
Essential
• Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Special Education, Education, Psychology, Social Work, Disability Studies, or a related field.
• RCI-recognised qualification/registration in Special Education will be preferred, wherever applicable to the role.
• 2–3 years of relevant experience in special education, inclusive education, early intervention, rehabilitation, or working with children with disabilities.
• Candidates with strong fieldwork/internship experience and relevant professional qualifications may also be considered.
Technical & Professional Skills
• Sound understanding of Individualised Education Plans (IEPs), differentiated instruction, and inclusive teaching practices.
• Practical understanding of disability categories including cerebral palsy, autism spectrum disorder, intellectual disability, and sensory impairments.
• Ability to develop/adapt teaching-learning materials according to individual learning needs.
• Familiarity with assistive technology and digital learning tools will be an advantage.
• Basic ability to document child progress and maintain intervention records using MS Excel/Google Sheets or similar tools.
• Knowledge of functional assessment, classroom observation, and child-centred intervention approaches will be preferred.
