About the Organization
Sister Doctors: The Unsung Heroes in Healthcare
Healthcare today is increasingly complex, balancing quality and cost, technology and humanity, and urban and rural needs. Amid these challenges, sustaining compassionate, affordable, and quality healthcare—especially for marginalized communities—has become difficult.
In India, around 1,000 Sister Doctors from 106 religious congregations serve tirelessly in rural and underserved areas. Combining their religious vocation with professional medical expertise, they provide preventive, curative, and palliative care in many specialties. Despite limited resources, long working hours, and many challenges, they remain deeply committed to serving the poor and vulnerable.
Through the Sister Doctors’ Forum of India (SDFI), founded in 1993, they continue to strengthen their mission through collaboration, training, and healthcare initiatives across the country.
