iProbono India works on cases involving disability justice, housing justice, criminal justice, child abuse, trafficking, and engages in advocacy efforts on these subject areas. We also provide support in the form of legal assistance to NGOs across the country working on a range of issues.
The Role
We’re looking for a dynamic, mid-career legal professional with expertise and litigation experience in child protection laws, particularly the Prevention of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act. Ideal candidates should have strong legal skills, strategic thinking, leadership abilities, and a long-term commitment to our work. Strong communication and organisational skills, and results-driven teamwork are essential.
This role involves providing direct legal representation to children, working on strategic litigation, advocacy initiatives and capacity enhancement efforts, and overseeing the work of other colleagues in this vertical. This is an opportunity to drive impactful initiatives while growing within iProbono India.
Responsibilities
- Oversee Delhi trial and appeallate court casework for child survivors of sexual abuse, bonded labour, trafficking, etc., which includes:
- Managing case oversight, coordination with panel advocates, social workers, and partner organisations; and ensuring effective court representation;
- Attending court hearings, drafting pleadings, briefing panel advocates, and liaising with police, CWCs and government authorities, when required;
- Conducting legal research and allocating responsibilities within the team, as required.
- Identify areas for legal interventions, lead advocacy and fact finding initiatives, and engage with government stakeholders. Identified areas may also be addressed through social impact litigation, for which the team member will have to work on legal strategy, research and working closely with the panel lawyers involved.
- Build relationships with non-profit organisations and state agencies to expand our network.
- Conduct training and develop legal resources on child rights laws for partner organisations, their beneficiaries, and the legal community.
- Collaborate with the communications team to develop advocacy materials and storytelling campaigns.
- Ensure that all internal documentation, case notes, litigation records, etc. are updated and ensure accurate reporting by the team.
Skills and Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in law.
- 4-7 years litigation experience in child rights and/ POCSO matters, in an NGO and/or litigation chamber.
- Sound knowledge of the Indian legal system, particularly laws related to child rights
- Excellent written and oral communication skills in English and Hindi.
