2. Project Brief & Geographical Coverage
PHIA Foundation is implementing Project Preserving Heritage, Promoting Livelihoods in Khaltsi & Saspol Block in Ladakh covering 6 Villages supported by HDFC Bank Parivartan with the goal of strengthening and promoting the sustainable livelihood system of the vulnerable communities of Leh district of Ladakh. To enable year-round vegetable cultivation in the extreme climate of Ladakh, 7 passive solar greenhouses, each measuring 576 square feet (32 ft × 18 ft), will be established using transparent, UV-stabilized polycarbonate sheets. Unlike traditional greenhouses, Ladakh Greenhouse maintains temperatures above freezing even in peak winters, allowing successful cultivation of vegetables like tomatoes, cauliflower, and cabbage. The fixed polycarbonate cladding, with a durability of 15–20 years, withstands high winds, heavy snowfall, and extreme cold without requiring seasonal removal. Ventilation features prevent excessive summer heat buildup. This initiative will significantly extend the cropping season, improving farmers' incomes and vegetable availability in the region.
The primary objective of the passive solar greenhouse intervention is to enhance vegetable cultivation capacity among farmers in Ladakh by providing durable, climate-resilient growing
structures. These greenhouses will allow farmers to produce three cycles of crops annually, overcoming traditional seasonal limitations. The model aims to reduce dependence on external food supplies, promote nutritional security, and generate additional income through off-season vegetable production.
