About CSD
Centre for Sustainable Development (CSD) is a non-profit organization registered in 2009 under the Tamil Nadu Society Registration Act. CSD works in the areas of Eco-San sanitation, DEWATS (Decentralized Wastewater Treatment Systems), afforestation and biodiversity conservation, water access in schools and villages, and organic farming, in partnership with government bodies (DRDA-Cuddalore, Tamil Nadu Government), corporates (Hyundai Motor India Foundation), and international agencies (Sanitation First UK/India).
Position Summary
CSD is seeking a qualified Civil Engineer to lead the design, construction supervision, and quality control of infrastructure works under its sanitation, water, and DEWATS programs. The Civil Engineer will be responsible for site execution, technical documentation, vendor/contractor coordination, and ensuring all construction activities meet engineering, safety, and budgetary standards.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's Degree / Diploma in Civil Engineering (B.E./B.Tech/Diploma) from a recognized institution.
- Minimum 3 – 5 Years of relevant experience in civil construction, preferably in rural infrastructure, WASH (Water, Sanitation & Hygiene), or NGO/CSR-funded projects.
- Sound knowledge of water supply systems, and small-scale civil works.
- Proficiency in AutoCAD, MS Excel, and basic estimation/costing software.
- Good communication skills in Tamil and English (mandatory).
- Ability to read and prepare technical drawings, BOQs (Bill of Quantities), and estimates.
- Valid two-wheeler driving license and willingness to travel extensively across project areas in various districts.
Roles and Responsibilities
- Prepare technical drawings, layouts, and cost estimates for Eco-San toilets, DEWATS units, water supply infrastructure, and other civil works.
- Conduct site surveys and feasibility assessments prior to project initiation.
- Ensure designs comply with government norms, donor specifications, and quality standards.
- Supervise day-to-day construction activities at project sites, ensuring adherence to approved designs and specifications.
- Monitor quality of materials and workmanship; conduct regular site inspections.
- Ensure construction work is completed within timelines and allocated budgets.
- Maintain safety standards at all construction sites.
- Coordinate with masons, contractors, and material suppliers for smooth execution of works.
- Verify measurement books, work bills, and contractor payments.
- Obtain and compare quotations for materials and labor.
- Maintain accurate site records, measurement books, photographs, and progress reports.
- Prepare periodic construction progress reports for the Project Manager and donors.
- Support preparation of completion certificates and asset handover documentation.
- Liaise with village panchayats, school authorities, and community members during construction.
- Support community mobilization efforts related to infrastructure usage and maintenance.
