Role Overview
The Research Data Engineer will be responsible for identifying, structuring, and leveraging organisational data to generate meaningful business and research insights. This role involves auditing and organising existing datasets, building automated data pipelines, supporting research teams in optimising workflows, and collaborating with the development team on data-intensive systems.
The position requires strong analytical thinking, technical proficiency in data handling and automation, and the ability to translate complex datasets into actionable insights for leadership and research stakeholders.
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct comprehensive audits of existing organisational datasets and create structured data inventories.
- Identify data gaps, inconsistencies, and quality issues; implement validation and cleansing strategies.
- Develop automated data pipelines (ETL/ELT workflows) to reduce manual reporting and repetitive data tasks.
- Design and maintain structured data models to support research and operational requirements.
- Generate business and research insights through data analysis and interpretation.
- Develop dashboards and reporting tools to support leadership decision-making.
- Collaborate with research teams to optimize data collection and analysis processes.
- Work closely with the development team on data-heavy applications, APIs, and reporting modules.
- Maintain documentation for data structures, workflows, and transformation logic.
- Promote best practices in data governance, data quality, and reproducibility.
Technical Skills Required
- 3–5 years of experience working in data engineering, analytics engineering, or applied data roles.
- Strong proficiency in Python for data processing, transformation, and automation.
- Advanced SQL skills with hands-on experience in PostgreSQL or MySQL, including schema design, indexing, and query optimisation.
- Proven experience designing and maintaining ETL/ELT pipelines and automated data workflows.
- Experience working with large and complex datasets, including data cleaning, validation, and transformation.
- Familiarity with data visualisation and dashboarding tools PowerBI or Tableau.
- Understanding of backend systems and APIs for data extraction and integration.
- Familiarity with version control systems such as Git/GitHub and structured documentation practices.
- Working knowledge of scheduling or workflow orchestration tools (e.g., cron jobs, Airflow, or equivalent) is desirable.

- Clear communication skills, capable of translating data findings into non-technical insights.

- Ability to collaborate effectively with research and technical teams.
Eligibility
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Data Science, Statistics, Engineering, Mathematics, or a related discipline
- 3–5 years of relevant experience in data engineering, analytics, or applied data roles.
Compensation
Remuneration will be commensurate with qualifications and experience, as per ADRI norms.
