Kangaroo Mother Care (KMC) is a scientifically proven, evidence- based, and highly cost-effective intervention for improving survival and health outcomes among low birth weight and preterm newborns. Recommended by the World Health Organisation, KMC promotes holistic newborn care through four core components:
1. Skin-to-Skin Contact: Continuous skin-to-skin contact between the caregiver and the newborn helps regulate body temperature, reduces the risk of hypothermia, promotes physiological stability, and strengthens bonding.
2. Close Monitoring: Regular monitoring of both mother and newborn enables timely identification of danger signs and supports early referral and medical intervention when required.
3. Exclusive Breastfeeding: Exclusive breastfeeding provides optimal nutrition and immunity to the newborn, supports healthy growth and development, and reduces the risk of infections and complications.
4. Counselling and Caregiver Support: Continuous counselling of mothers and caregivers on newborn danger signs, breastfeeding and maternal nutrition, infection prevention and control (IPC), and appropriate neonatal care practices helps address myths and harmful traditional practices while promoting informed caregiving behaviours.
Main Components of the Model:
1. Recruit and deploy dedicated healthcare workers to provide Kangaroo Mother Care counselling and support to mothers and close caregivers.
2. Build the capacity of clinicians and nursing staff through training and supportive supervision on Kangaroo Mother Care practices and related programme components.
3. Conduct post-discharge follow-ups with families to encourage continued KMC practice, reinforce positive caregiving behaviours, and monitor newborns for danger signs and timely referral needs.
Key Responsibilities
• Coordinate and liaise with government stakeholders, hospital leadership, healthcare providers, and other key stakeholders to support effective implementation and strengthen the delivery of the Kangaroo Mother Care (KMC) programme.
• Lead capacity-building and supportive supervision of nursing staff through training, mentoring, and performance reviews; strengthen clinical observation and quality documentation practices to ensure accuracy and completeness; and provide on-the- ground support in troubleshooting facility-level and beneficiary-care challenges through a proactive problem-solving approach.
• Oversee day-to-day programme operations at the facility, including management of a team of 10–12 nurses, preparation of monthly duty rosters, beneficiary screening, close monitoring of critical cases and referrals, and ensuring adherence to programme, discharge, referral, and IPC protocols. Ensure timely follow-ups and manage programme inventory.
• Enhance programme quality through consistent support and coordination with the nursing team, and through timely sharing of information, data, and facility-level updates with the line manager.
Position Overview
This position will play a critical role in establishing and strengthening programmes across multiple districts in Rajasthan. The Programme Coordinator will support health facility assessments, liaise with health system and government stakeholders, and work closely with Prayatn at the district level to facilitate programme setup and implementation. Once programmes are operational, the role will support ongoing coordination, field implementation, and overall programme management.
