Wetlands International South Asia office seeks a Junior Technical Officer Eco-Hydrology to support the development of the organisation’s portfolio in water management for wetlands conservation. This is a full-time position based in New Delhi.
Job Purpose
The incumbent will work primarily on hydrological aspects of various projects at Wetlands International South Asia. This includes catchment-scale hydrological assessments, such as water balance estimation, hydrograph preparation, water quality assessment, estimation of surface-groundwater interactions, flow regime estimation, etc. The role also involves integrating hydrological insights into site-specific management planning, engaging with government and non-government stakeholders, developing and delivering capacity-building programmes, and contributing to technical reports, knowledge products, and project concepts in wetland management.
Roles and responsibilities
- Design and implement hydrological and water quality monitoring programmes at demonstration sites, including in-situ measurements, sampling, laboratory analysis, and interpretation of physico-chemical and biological parameters to evaluate wetland condition and management effectiveness
- Lead the development, validation, and application of hydrological and water quality assessment tools, modelling frameworks, and decision-support systems for wetland management
- Formulate and review concept notes and project proposals addressing wetlands hydrology, hydro-ecological processes, and integrated water resources management
- Strengthen the technical capacity of wetland managers and stakeholders in hydrological and water quality assessment methodologies, and in integrating wetlands into basin-scale water resources planning and policy
- Coordinate the preparation, execution, and monitoring of operational plans in collaboration with partner institutions, ensuring technical rigour and alignment with project objectives
- Provide scientific inputs to policy and advocacy initiatives related to wetlands hydrology, water quality, and climate change adaptation
- Develop and implement targeted communication and outreach strategies to disseminate scientific findings on wetland–hydrology–climate linkages
- Prepare peer-reviewed scientific papers, technical reports, and data-driven recommendations for wetland conservation and management.
Qualifications and Experience
Essential qualifications

- Proficiency in hydrological and hydro-ecological assessments, including wetland-catchment water balance, flow modelling, and hydrodynamic analysis
- Demonstrated skills in water quality monitoring, including sampling design, analysis of physico-chemical and biological parameters, and interpretation of results
- Competence in GIS and remote sensing applications for hydrology and wetland assessment. Familiarity with hydrological modelling software (e.g., SWAT, MIKE SHE, HEC-HMS, WEAP) and statistical analysis tools (e.g., R, Python, or similar) is valued
- Strong technical writing and scientific reporting skills
- Track record in designing and implementing field monitoring programmes for hydrology and water quality
Desirable qualifications
- Knowledge of wetland biodiversity and migratory waterbirds
- Familiarity with Ramsar Convention, CMS, and related national wetland policies
