Context
Responsibility for the design, implementation, conduct and reporting of medical research projects conducted by The George Institute is shared by the research divisions and the Statistics division.
The Biostatistics team is responsible for the provision of statistical expertise to support the research done at the George Institute; this includes clinical trials, meta-analyses, observational studies, surveys as well as teaching and the development of new statistical methods. Occasionally, the team also provides services to external organisations.
The Role
The Biostatistician is responsible for the design, analysis and reporting of medical research projects conducted by the George Institute in India and globally. This position is based in New Delhi or Hyderabad.
Reporting Relationships
The Biostatistician will report to the Head of Biostatistics (India). This role may include line management and mentoring responsibilities for junior staff.
Duties and Key Responsibilities
- Support the statistical design of studies
- Perform sample size calculations
- Develop sampling plans and help research teams carry out the sampling
- Develop Statistical Analysis Plans and conduct analyses for clinical trials, observational studies and other health research projects
- Provide statistical advice to researchers
- Interpret and co-author study results
- Provide statistical support for funding applications
- Contribute to proposal and budget development
- Keep abreast of new statistical methods and contribute to capacity development in novel statistical methods – for example, Bayesian methods, adaptive trial designs, causal inference methods
- Manage and/or mentor junior biostatistics staff
- Independently manage all statistical aspects of a project
- Serve as a key point of contact for internal and external researchers on assigned projects.
- Comply with all institute policies and SOPs as well as regulatory requirements for the programming, analysis and reporting of research projects (e.g. ICMR, FDA, etc.)

Skills, Knowledge and Experience
Essential
- PhD in Statistics/Biostatistics
- At least 3 years' experience as a Biostatistician in an academic/health setting or related field
- Excellent working knowledge of at least one statistical software package (R, SAS or Stata)
- In-depth understanding of probability and statistics theory
- Understanding of data management principles
- Understanding of health and biomedical research
- Applied knowledge of advanced statistical methods including generalized linear models, survival analysis, longitudinal/repeated-measures methods, missing data methods (e.g. multiple imputation), and mixed-effects models.
- Experience independently managing statistical components of research projects, including planning, prioritisation and resource allocation.
- Working knowledge of regulatory requirements for health, clinical and biomedical research
- Strong focus on quality and timely delivery of work.
- Well organized with good time management skills
- Strong problem solving and analytical skills
- Excellent interpersonal skills with high level of proficiency in English
- Ability to work well and flexibly i.e. autonomously, in small teams and with a wide range of varied stakeholders
- Ability to see the big picture, whilst still maintaining a focus on detail and implementation
- Ability to be flexible and adaptable in the face of changing organisational priorities and ambiguous environments
Desirable
- Working knowledge of and experience in questionnaire development and primary data collection
- Working knowledge of centralized statistical monitoring
- Familiarity with adaptive trial designs, Bayesian methods, or causal inference methods
- Knowledge of routinely collected data and methods for curating and analysing such data.
- Track record of leading scientific publications, including first-author peer-reviewed publications.
- Experience developing grant applications as a named investigator or lead applicant.
