About Chaupal: Founded in 2006, Chaupal Gramin Vikas Prashikshan Evam Shodh Sansthan is a non-governmental organization based in the Surguja district in the northern part of the state of Chhattisgarh. The organization’s work focuses on the well-being of Adivasis by demanding, facilitating, and monitoring the implementation of Acts and schemes to improve access to water, food, healthcare, education, employment, social security, and rights over land and forest resources. In recent years, Chaupal has also initiated work in the domain of watershed development, conservation of indigenous seeds of food grains, and improving the health and nutrition status of children under 3 years, girls' education, etc. Chaupal’s strength is community-based monitoring, action and advocacy. The organization is currently working in 5 districts of the State of Chhattisgarh.
About Project:Chaupal works across 84 villages in Lakhanpur and Batauli blocks of Surguja district to strengthen water resource management and rural livelihoods. The initiative focuses on watershed development, creation of natural resource management assets, and improving water availability. Through community engagement and capacity building, the project promotes sustainable agriculture, diversified livelihoods, and stronger local institutions. It aims to enhance the incomes of small and marginal farmers, encourage women’s participation, and ensure long-term, community-led management of land and water resources.
Job Description: Chaupal invites applications for the position of Watershed Expert (Consultant) to provide technical support for the implementation of the High Impact Mega Watershed Program in Lakhanpur and Batauli blocks of Surguja district, Chhattisgarh. The Watershed Expert will be responsible for supporting the planning, technical design, execution, supervision and monitoring of watershed development and natural resource management works. The position involves regular field visits and close coordination with the project team, community institutions and other relevant stakeholders to ensure the quality and effective implementation of project activities.
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct field visits, site surveys and assessments for proposed watershed and civil works.
- Support the planning and technical design of watershed structures and other natural resource management assets.
- Prepare basic estimates, measurements, drawings and technical specifications for project works.
- Supervise and monitor the quality and progress of civil and watershed-related works.
- Ensure that works are implemented as per approved designs, technical standards and quality requirements.
- Take measurements and maintain records of completed and ongoing works.
- Use basic GIS and mapping tools for site identification, planning and monitoring.
- Provide technical guidance to field teams and community members during implementation.
- Coordinate with project staff, community institutions, contractors/service providers and other stakeholders as required.
- Document field activities through measurements, photographs, maps and technical reports.
- Support preparation of project progress reports and other technical documentation.
- Identify technical issues during implementation and suggest appropriate solutions.
- Support the project team in planning and monitoring water conservation, soil and moisture conservation and other watershed development activities.
- Undertake other technical responsibilities assigned by the Project Management Team.
Educational Qualification
- B.Tech/B.E. in Civil Engineering, Diploma in Civil Engineering from a recognized institution.
- Basic knowledge of GIS and mapping tools.
Experience
- Minimum 3 years of relevant work experience in watershed development, soil and water conservation, rural infrastructure or related field-based civil engineering work.
- Experience in implementing or supervising watershed-related structures and natural resource management works will be preferred.
Required Skills & Competencies
- Good understanding of basic civil engineering principles and field construction practices.
- Knowledge of watershed development and soil & water conservation works.
- Ability to prepare measurements, estimates and basic technical drawings.
- Basic GIS and mapping skills.
- Strong field orientation and willingness to travel regularly to project villages.
- Good communication and coordination skills.
- Ability to work with rural communities and field teams.
- Good documentation and reporting skills.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
Travel: Willingness to travel at HO/cluster/village level in program geographies as required.
Monthly Honorarium: INR35,516/-.
Travel allowance will be given separately – INR 6000/-.
Probation Period: 3 months
