The project implements targeted activities to advance One Health planning and enhance AFI/ADD surveillance through strategic coordination, capacity building, and system strengthening.
About the Position
An international non-governmental organization (INGO) is seeking eligible candidates for the position of Laboratory Technician/ Assistant based in Pune. The Laboratory Technician/ Assistant will support field and laboratory operations for surveillance of Acute Febrile Illness (AFI) and Acute Diarrheal Disease (ADD), including patient enrolment support, specimen collection, sample transport, laboratory processing/testing support, and accurate documentation/data entry.
The lab Technician/ Assistant will coordinate closely with clinicians, surveillance teams, and laboratory staff to ensure timely, complete, and high-quality laboratory-supported surveillance in accordance with approved protocols, testing algorithms, and quality and biosafety standards.
Roles and Responsibilities
1) Patient Enrolment Support and Specimen Collection
• Support clinicians and surveillance staff in enrolling eligible patients as per the study/protocol requirements.
• Collect clinical specimens as per protocol, including blood, throat swab, urine, and stool (as applicable).
• Ensure correct specimen labelling, completion of requisition forms, and adherence to informed consent processes in accordance with project’s protocol.
• Follow standard precautions and biosafety procedures during collection, handling, and transport.
2) Data Entry and Forms Management
• Complete and maintain accurate records for patient and sample-related information.
• Ensure timely completion of all required forms (e.g., Patient Enrolment Form, Laboratory Investigation Form, Consent Forms, and other project formats).
• Perform accurate data entry into registers and/or electronic systems.
3) Sample Packaging and Transport
• Ensure appropriate packaging, storage, and transport of specimens to designated laboratories, maintaining cold chain (where required) and dispatch/receipt logs.
• Transport specimens to the designated laboratory, ensure proper handover/receipt documentation, and perform timely laboratory processing and testing to support prompt reporting of results as per protocol.
4) Laboratory Processing and Testing Support
• Perform specimen processing and testing in alignment with standard protocols and defined diagnostic algorithms, including (as applicable):
o Serum separation and aliquoting
o Smear preparation, staining, and microscopy
o Bacterial culture, identification, and antimicrobial susceptibility testing (including automated systems where available)
o ELISA and PCR testing
• Ensure compliance with laboratory quality systems, internal controls, and documentation requirements.
5) Documentation, Inventory, and Quality/Biosafety
• Maintain laboratory registers/logs, including sample receipt, processing, testing, storage, and disposal records.
• Support inventory tracking of consumables, reagents, and kits; raise timely requests for replenishment to prevent stock-outs.
• Follow biosafety and biomedical waste management procedures as per institutional and regulatory requirements.
• Maintain confidentiality of patient information and comply with project data protection requirements.
6) Other Responsibilities
• Perform other laboratory- or field-related tasks as required for project needs, as assigned by the Senior Laboratory Technician/ Project Coordinator /Supervisor/Nodal Officer.
Qualifications and Experience
Essential
• Diploma / BSc / MSc in Medical Laboratory Technology, Microbiology, or a related discipline.
• 3–5 years of hands-on experience in diagnostic laboratory settings (public or private).
• Familiarity with routine microbiology and serology workflows; experience in sample handling and transport processes.
• Basic computer proficiency for data entry, documentation, and reporting (MS Office and/or electronic data tools).
• Proficiency in Marathi, English (reading, writing, and speaking) and Hindi.
Skills and Competencies
• Strong technical writing, documentation, and presentation development skills.
• Ability to work effectively as part of a team.
• Willingness to travel locally as required for sample collection/transport and field coordination.
• Strong attention to detail, ability to manage multiple tasks, and adherence to timelines.
