The Margins to Access Project (MAP),An Initiative of The Ara Trust formerly known as Migration & Asylum Project, was founded in 2013 to democratize access to justice for migrants and forcibly displaced persons in India who face critical legal protection gaps. MAP builds community awareness, provides legal first response, and strengthens institutional accountability to address the impacts of migration, displacement, and gender-based violence (GBV). Since its inception, MAP has assisted more than 25,000 marginalized individuals, including survivors of GBV, torture, and labour exploitation. MAP is a women-led organization, and over 75% of its clients are women.

The Position:
 
The Project Coordinator – Law and Gender will play a key role in leading and supporting MAP's legal and gender justice programming under the Displacement, Movement and Inclusion (DMI) vertical.
 
The position will provide legal and technical leadership for programme implementation, capacity building, legal research, strategic interventions, partnerships, advocacy, monitoring, evaluation, learning, and documentation. The Project Coordinator will work closely with communities, grassroots justice actors, lawyers, legal service institutions, government stakeholders, civil society organizations, and other actors within the justice ecosystem.
 
The role requires a strong understanding of gender justice, women's rights, access to justice, and relevant legal and policy frameworks. The Project Coordinator will also contribute to strengthening community-rooted and gender-responsive approaches to legal empowerment and institutional accountability.
 
This is a full-time, on-site position with periodic travel to other state locations.
 
Key Roles and Responsibilities
 
Project Management & Oversight
  • Provide legal and technical oversight legal expertise, analytical guidance and thought leadershipfor the implementation of project activities, ensuring that interventions are grounded in relevant national and international legal and policy frameworks and aligned with project objectives.
  • Represent the organisation at relevant meetings, consultations, conferences and other forums, including making presentations and contributing legal and policy expertise.
  • Travel as required for official purposes in accordance with project and organisational needs.
Outreach & Stakeholder Engagement
  • Conduct legal capacity-building and training for grassroots justice actors, including paralegal volunteers, lawyers, litigators, community-based justice actors and other relevant stakeholders across the States in which the organisation operates, with a focus on women’s rights, access to justice and available legal remedies.
  • Design and conduct legal workshops, trainings and awareness sessions for relevant stakeholders and communities, translating complex legal and policy frameworks into accessible and practical guidance.
  • Oversee community and stakeholder outreach and engagement, ensuring that legal needs, barriers to justice and community experiences are appropriately documented and incorporated into programme design, implementation and advocacy.
Partnerships & Networks
  • Develop and maintain networks and partnerships with relevant government departments and officials, legal professionals, justice-sector actors, civil society organisations, community-based organisations and other stakeholders to strengthen access to justice and implementation of project activities.
  • Build effective collaboration with institutional and justice-sector actors relevant to the project, including legal services providers, lawyers, courts and tribunals, statutory bodies and other accountability institutions, as appropriate.
  • Engage with accountability and redress mechanisms, including relevant UN mechanisms and domestic judicial, quasi-judicial and administrative bodies, and support the preparation of complaints, petitions, submissions, reports and other legal or advocacy interventions.
Monitoring, Evaluation & Learning
  • Contribute to monitoring, evaluation and learning (MEL) by developing and tracking relevant legal and programme indicators, documenting outputs and outcomes, analysing emerging trends and lessons, and using evidence and learning to strengthen project implementation and strategy.
  • Maintain high-quality documentation and reporting systems, including timely preparation of narrative and technical reports, case studies, outcome documentation and other project deliverables, in accordance with donor and organisational requirements.
  • Contribute to project review and learning processes, including assessing the effectiveness of legal interventions, identifying challenges and adaptations, and documenting promising practices and models that can inform future programming and advocacy.
  • Undertake other duties and responsibilities as reasonably assigned in furtherance of the organisation’s objectives and its work with the communities it serves.
 
The Project Coordinator will report directly to the senior management, and will be part of MAP’s
programme leadership team. They will supervise and provide strategic and operational guidance to a team of 3–4 lawyers, ensuring alignment of research, monitoring, and partnership initiatives with the programme’s Theory of Change and overall organisational objectives.

Qualifications & Experience

  • Graduate degree in Law, with postgraduation in relevant discipline preferred;
  • A minimum of 6 to 10 years of work experience familiarity with Refugee laws pertaining to sexual and gender-based violence and institutional strengthening;
  • Experience engaging with marginalised communities and working with grassroots support structures;
  • Excellent research, coordination, and documentation skills;
  • Supervisory experience with PLVs, field teams, or community workers;
  • Understanding of gender-based violence responses and community justice mechanisms;
  • High-quality written and verbal communication skills (Hindi and English);
  • Ability to develop strong interpersonal skills, and engage with all levels in the organisation;
  • Strong work ethic and attention to detail in all aspects of work;
  • Creative thinker and problem solver;
  • Consummate professional in discretion, discernment, and confidentiality.
