ABOUT SNEHA
SNEHA (Society for Nutrition, Education and Health Action) is a Mumbai-based non-profit organization dedicated to improving the health, nutrition, and safety of women and children living in vulnerable urban informal settlements. Our mission is to empower urban women and children through integrated health and nutrition programs, education, and advocacy.
We work through a dual approach—engaging both care seekers and care providers. At the community level, we empower women and families to become agents of change, while simultaneously
collaborating with public health and safety systems to drive sustainable improvements in urban health outcomes.

SNEHA’s key programs include:
Maternal and Child Health
Public System Partnership
Empowerment, Health and Sexuality of Adolescent
Prevention of Violence against Women and Children
Palliative Care

Between 2016 and 2025, SNEHA directly reached over 620,555 women, children, and healthcare workers, and indirectly impacted a population of over 3.63 million across seven municipal corporations and three municipal councils in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR).
Today, SNEHA is a 500+ member organization with deep grassroots presence and a strong track record of reducing maternal and neonatal mortality, child malnutrition, adolescent anemia, and violence against women and children—key determinants of health equity for families and communities.

ABOUT THE PROGRAM:
SNEHA’s Program on Prevention of Violence against Women and Children (PVWC) aims to develop high-impact strategies for primary prevention, ensure survivors’ access to protection and justice,
empower women to claim their rights, mobilize communities around ‘zero tolerance for violence’, and respond to the needs and rights of excluded and neglected groups. Using a socio-ecologic model as a framework for action at different levels to prevent violence, the program works on primary prevention, secondary intervention and tertiary prevention. Critical evaluation of 15 years of rich field experience prompted the realization that SNEHA's contribution would be adequate only once it could articulate its impact and share it in a form immediately usable for stakeholders. A five-year scientific effort led to the articulation of causal links between programme components and a sequence of outcomes and measurable impact indicators. This theory of change was tested in the TARA program. The program worked with the Global Health Research Group on exploring the support needs of mental health of survivors of domestic violence and modern slavery.

ABOUT THE PROJECT:
Community Stewardship
The program works on a community stewardship model in Wadala that aims to create a community that actively addresses and supports the prevention of gender-based violence through robust community ownership. The program works on exploring different ways to deepen the community stewardship model. It works with couples and first-time parents, deaddiction and integration of maternal and child health into primary and secondary interventions in informal communities of Wadala with an aim to build a model of collectivization and community ownership.

Health Systems Strengthening
The project focuses on making violence prevention and survivor support an integrated part of local health and public services. We work with municipal corporations to integrate specialized counselling and care into hospitals and community health groups, such as ASHA (Accredited Social Health Activist) workers and Mahila Arogya Samitis (MAS). The project aims to map out existing resources and develop referral pathways between police, legal services, and health facilities, so that women and children can access help easily and safely. Our team supports this by mentoring ASHAs and MAS members to get equipped to provide a response and referral to women and children survivors of violence with an aim to create a model for health system partnerships and communities.

SNEHA Knowledge Centre
SNEHA Knowledge Centre is an initiative to strengthen the health promotion and violence prevention ecosystem for women and children in India through the development, scaling and sharing of evidence-based solutions. It builds upon SNEHA’s expertise of over 25 years in health interventions (curative, preventive and promotive) and violence prevention and works in partnership with public systems, policy makers, community organizations, service providers, research and education within the ecosystem. Its objectives are to work on systems development, partnership and collaborations and capacity strengthening of civil society organizations to carry out systematic work.
