1. Organisation Background
UNFPA is the United Nations sexual and reproductive health agency. Our mission is to deliver a world where every pregnancy is wanted, every childbirth is safe, and every young person's potential is fulfilled. UNFPA’s Strategic Plan 2026–2029 is anchored in the ICPD vision and focuses on four interconnected outcomes: ending unmet need for family planning; ending preventable maternal deaths; ending gender-based violence and harmful practices; and enabling countries to anticipate and respond to demographic change through evidence- and rights-based policies.
UNFPA has been a longstanding partner of the Government of India since 1974 and is currently implementing its 10th Country Programme. UNFPA supports the Government of India in improving access to and quality of maternal and newborn health services, expanding contraceptive choices, and advancing quality of care and reproductive rights. Following the launch of the Government of India's SUMAN 2030 Roadmap to reduce the Maternal Mortality Ratio (MMR) to 70 or below per 100,000 live births, UNFPA works closely with the Maternal Health Division of the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW) to support national maternal health flagship programmes.
