REACH is a leading non-profit organisation working on Tuberculosis and Non-Communicable Diseases, headquartered in Chennai. Established in 1999, REACH is currently implementing multiple projects across the country, working closely with health systems and communities to advance equitable health for all.
REACH will be implementing a project to address the dual burden of TB and undernutrition in Vaishali district of Bihar. The project will be implemented in all the TB Units of Vaishali district. REACH is seeking applications from suitable candidates for the position of Clinical Nutritionist. This is a four-year project supported by Tata Trust.
The broad aim of the project is to implement a family-centered nutrition support package for TB affected households, under routine programmatic conditions. The project seeks to improve nutritional status and TB treatment outcomes and reduce household-level TB transmission, through closer coordination with existing public health and social welfare systems.
Under the project, a Clinical Nutritionist is required to provide counselling support to people with TB and their household contacts (HHCs). In addition, the Nutritionist will also provide support in counselling and education, capacity building and mentoring of Community Health Workers.
Key Responsibilities of Clinical Nutritionist
Assess nutritional needs
- Conduct nutritional assessments of Persons with TB (PwTB) and family members
- Track and follow up on nutritional improvement over time
Develop nutrition plans
- Develop individualised diet plans for PwTB
- Develop family nutrition plans
Provide counselling and education
- Provide specialised nutrition counselling (in-person/telephonic) to PwTB and family members with severe undernutrition (BMI <16)
- Provide specialised nutrition counselling for PwTB and family members with co-morbidities (diabetes, anaemia, hypertension, etc.)
Capacity building and mentoring
- Train and support Community Health Workers (CHWs) on nutrition counselling and anthropometric assessment
- Provide ongoing mentoring to support management of complex nutritional needs
Research and development of tools
- Assist in development of training materials for CHWs and IEC materials for PwTB
- Conduct nutrition surveys to understand local food practices and preferences
Lead community and facility-based engagement
- Conduct nutrition meetings at health facilities and within communities
Qualifications and skills
The ideal candidate will have
- A postgraduate degree (M.Sc.) in Nutrition and Dietetics (essential)
- At least 2–3 years of relevant experience in clinical settings.
- Prior experience working with TB or NCDs will be an advantage
- Good counselling skills to lead people for a positive behaviour change
- Good computer skills and data handling ability
- Willingness to travel within the district for counselling and capacity building purpose
- Good communication and interpersonal skills
- Any prior experience of working in Bihar will be an added advantage
- Spoken and written fluency in Hindi language is a must for the position
