Position: Counselor Educator ( Open to female candidates only)

PURPOSE OF POST:
Perform counselling and provide psychoeducation sessions for patients, following existing medical and mental health DWBI protocols and procedures, in order to improve their psychosocial condition and quality of life.
Perform counselling for patients and caregivers with significant psychological distress.
Perform counselling for patients and caregivers in the area of palliative care in collaboration with other members of the multidisciplinary team. Assist in the assessment of patients with severe mental disorders who may require referral for psychiatric care, in collaboration with the Mental Health Activity Manager and medical team members.
FUNCTIONAL AND HIERARCHICAL LINES
Hierarchically & functionally accountable to Mental Health Activity Manager
ACCOUNTABILITIES:
• Identify the psychosocial needs of patients and has a good clinical judgement.
• Actively promote the availability of counselling services and carry out individual or group counselling, provide psychoeducation sessions, to patients and their families (when needed), in order to alleviate their psychosocial challenges within the scope of the project
• Assist in the referral of patients for psychiatric care at other institutions, when necessary, in order to propose the best support available
• Maintain files and keep statistics of daily activities
• Participate in the creation of any material needed for counselling activities
• Discuss challenges and problems in counselling with the Mental Health Activity Manager
• Inform line manager of any challenges arising during the day-to-day activities
• Participate in team meetings to share experiences and discuss cases with other counsellors whilst adhering to the maintenance of privacy and confidentiality
Take active part in trainings, supervision sessions and support the Mental Health Activity Manager, when necessary, in providing sensitization for DWBI staff or external partners about mental health /psychosocial issues.
CONTEXT SPECIFIC ACCOUNTABILITIES:
Main responsibilities and tasks:
• Conduct psycho-educational sessions as necessary and appropriate
• Actively promote the availability of counselling services
• Provide person-centered care to patients, family members and caregivers throughout their treatment during the illness phase including end of life care
• Provide individual, partner, and family counselling as necessary and required
• Provide counselling to patients and family members in various relevant areas not limited to: adaptation to Advanced HIV disease and its consequences, stigma and self-esteem, dignity, relationships, social functioning, dealing with grief and loss, spiritual well-being and culturally-based needs
• Conduct psychological assessments to evaluate patients’ social and emotional status
• Refer patients when necessary to other members of the multidisciplinary team
• Consult and collaborate with the medical team on patients with psychiatric conditions who may require referral
Reporting:
• Keep systematic records of work and maintain confidentiality
• Keep and maintain DWBI Mental Health patient files
• Maintain relevant registers regarding specific topics including end of life care, sexual and gender based violence and other necessary registers
• Participate in Mental Health Team training and continuing education sessions
• Participate in regular clinical supervision with Mental Health Activity Manager
• Participate in multidisciplinary team meetings
• Participate in general staff meetings

EQUIREMENTS
• Education: Bachelor Degree in counselling, social sciences, psychology or other similar degree/diploma
• Experience:
1. Essential: Minimum 2 years of work experience of working in non-governmental organization or paramedical services
2. Desirable: Previous experience with terminal illness and palliative care counselling an asset
3. Previous experience of working at DWBI
• Languages: Hindi language essential. English language desirable
