POSITION TITLE: Technical and Scientific Editor
LOCATION: Noida
LENGTH OF ASSIGNMENT: Yearly contract, extendable subject to availability of funds
Position Summary:
PopulationCouncil Consulting (PCC) is seeking an experienced and detail-oriented Technical and Scientific Editor to support in reviewing and refining our technical proposals, scientific papers, research manuscripts, evaluation reports, policy briefs, and other knowledge products in meeting the highest international standards of excellence. This role will ensure that all written deliverables are accurate, clear, professionally formatted, and aligned with global quality standards. The incumbent will be responsible for the end-to-end editorial process, from structural refinement and linguistic polishing to rigorous compliance checks for plagiarism and AIgenerated content. He/she will work closely with senior researchers, consultants, proposal teams, and technical experts to enhance the quality, consistency, and overall impact of organizational outputs.
Key Responsibilities
- Undertake comprehensive and substantive review, editing, copy editing and proofreading for a wide range of documents, including technical proposals, research reports, manuscripts, scientific papers, policy briefs and presentations.
- Refine document structure and flow to ensure that clear, concise, evidence-based, logical, and accessible to the intended audience, including clients, government agencies, journals, and development partners.
- Correct grammar, punctuation, syntax, spelling and formatting, while standardising language according to specific regional requirements, maintaining native-level proficiency in US, UK and Indian English.
- Manage document formatting and maintain consistency in terminology, abbreviations, references, charts, tables, and annexures.
- Enforce strict adherence to journal guidelines and referencing styles (e.g., APA, AMA, Chicago, Vancouver).
- Verify the accuracy of data references and cross-check citations against the bibliography.
- Work closely with researchers and program managers to improve language while preserving scientific accuracy and technical meaning.
- Utilise advanced tools to identify and refine AI-generated language, ensuring the human voice and scientific authority of the manuscripts are preserved.
- Conduct rigorous plagiarism audits using industry-standard software to ensure original content.
- Manage editorial timelines for multiple high-priority projects simultaneously, ensuring all deadlines are met.
- Coordinate with graphic designers and desktop publishers, as required, for final production of reports and proposals.
- Harmonise manuscripts with organisational style guides, branding standards, and client requirements.
Qualifications & Experience
- Master’s degree in English, Journalism, Communications, or related field, from a reputed institute or University.
- 8-10 years of experience in copy editing, scientific editing, proposal editing, or research publishing. A proven track record within a scientific publishing house, research institute, or international consulting firm is highly preferred.
- Prior experience in public health, international development, consulting, NGO, or research sectors preferred.
- Strong experience reviewing scientific manuscripts and client’s proposals.
Skills & Competencies
- Exceptional command of English language and editorial skills; must be able to switch seamlessly between US and UK conventions.
- Expert-level command of MS Office Suite (particularly Word’s advanced formatting features).
- Proficiency in plagiarism detection tools (Turnitin, Copyscape) and AI-detection software.
- High attention to detail and accuracy, with ability to spot subtle inconsistencies in data reporting or formatting that others might miss.
- Ability to work under pressure and manage deadlines.
- Strong coordination and communication skills.
- Confidentiality and professionalism.
Preferred Attributes
- Familiarity with the global development sector or social science research. Candidates with experience in health and related areas are preferred.
- Experience managing the peer-review submission process for high-impact journals.
- Familiarity with MERL reports, impact assessments, and research ethics documentation.
- Ability to translate complex technical jargon into clear, compelling prose for clients and stakeholders.
