B.Project Background
 
The Indo-German technical cooperation project “Energy Storage for Renewable Energy Integration in India (StoREin)" led by the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE), Government of India and jointly implemented with Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH, commissioned by the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Climate Action, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety (BMUKN) under the International Climate Initiative (IKI) is a transformative initiative aims to significantly advance the integration of renewable energy into India's power grid at the Distribution level by leveraging effective energy storage solutions
 
The project is being implemented together with leading technical and research Consortium Partners; Fraunhofer Institute for Energy Economics and Energy System Technology (Fraunhofer IEE) Germany, Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay, The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI) and World Resources Institute (WRI) India.
 
The project adopts a multi-pronged approach with five key components:
  • Policy &regulatory frameworks: Influencing policy frameworks and regulations to enable and incentivize energy storage adoption.
  • Demonstration projects: Implementing demonstration projects showcasing the practical application of various energy storage technologies in different settings in the distribution grid.
  • Technical analysis and R&D networks: Conducting in-depth research on energy storage technologies, integration challenges, and potential solutions specific to the Indian context with the target to find viable solutions.
  • Capacity building: Equipping stakeholders with the knowledge and skills needed to develop, plan, implement, operate, and manage energy storage systems effectively.
  •  Awareness & dissemination: Raising awareness among the public and policymakers about the benefits and importance of energy storage for renewable energy integration.  
The project fosters engagement with a wide range of stakeholders, including:
  • Central government ministries and agencies: Working closely with Ministry for New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) and other relevant bodies like the Ministry of Power, NITI Aayog, Central Electricity Authority, Central Electricity Regulatory Commission, and Solar Energy Corporation of India to ensure alignment with national energy goals.
  • State governments and regulatory bodies: Engaging directly with state-level departments, agencies, Distribution Companies (DISCOMs), and regulatory commissions in various states to facilitate ground-level implementation and adaptation to specific regional needs and approval by MNRE.
  • By adopting this comprehensive and collaborative approach, StoREin is poised to play a pivotal role in unlocking the full potential of renewable energy in India and paving the way for a sustainable and resilient power system for the future. 
C. Tasks and Responsibilities
 
The intern is responsible for the following tasks:
  • Conduct comprehensive research and analysis on renewable energy, energy storage technologies, policies, and market trends in India and globally.
  • Analyse existing energy markets with a critical focus on renewable energy integration, storage systems, and their associated policy and regulatory frameworks.
  • Assist in the development of reports, policy briefs, and presentations.
  • Assist in planning and organising technical meetings, webinars, workshops, and events, including preparation of agendas, presentations, participant lists, meeting documentation, and follow-up actions.
  • Prepare Minutes of Meetings (MoMs), and progress summaries for internal coordination meetings and meetings with partners.
  • Support team in coordination with Partner and stakeholder (conducting meetings, reporting, documentation of progress update, action points / next steps)
  • Support knowledge management activities, including maintaining project documentation, technical resources, databases, and dissemination materials.
  • Assist in developing communication materials, including presentations, briefing notes, infographics, newsletters, and other outreach products.
  • Support in preparing IKI reports by collecting information from output leads and putting together important links for reporting.
  • Support in putting together data for Operational Plans and results-based Monitoring and evaluation tools.
  • Assist in putting together communication and knowledge products e.g. reports, flyers, factsheets, infographics, standees, backdrops.
  • Support in updating project related information in GIZ internal websites/online platforms, relevant external websites, social media platforms, newsletters etc.
  • Support in creating relevant databases as required
  • Any other tasks as assigned by Project Lead and Output leads of the project. 
D. Required Qualifications and Skills
  • Postgraduation (M.Tech, M.Sc., master’s or equivalent) in engineering, preferably in electrical/renewable energy/energy economics/power system.
  • Candidates who are currently pursuing their postgraduate studies or have completed their post graduate degree within last six months are eligible to apply.
  • Good communication skills to be able to develop knowledge products. Practical knowledge of Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools would be preferred.
  • Proficiency in MS Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint), strong analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team, strong organizational and time management skills
  • Candidates who are available for at least 20 weeks, are encouraged to apply for the internship programme
  • Fluency in English (written and spoken). 
Additional information:
  • Internship agreement for a duration of minimum 5 months and maximum up to 6 months.
  • Monthly stipend of Rs.24,000/- and INR 5,000/- per month (in lumpsum) for local travel.
  • Interns to arrange accommodation on their own.
  • In case of official travel during assignment GIZ travel guidelines shall apply.
