About us
Ayang Trust is a social purpose organization working towards building the ecosystem for sustainable self empowered communities in Northeast India through interventions in quality education and livelihoods. At the heart of the organization is The Hummingbird School started in January 2017 to provide a contextual and holistic education to the children of Majuli, set up completely in partnership with the local community. Ayang grew out of the various and urgent needs of the people of Majuli and was registered in November 2017 and has since expanded its work into a diverse range of development programs.

The Opportunity
Ayang Trust is looking for a compassionate, responsible, and dedicated individual to join The Hummingbird School as a Resident Mentor. This pivotal role is central to the residential life of the school, helping create a safe, nurturing, and supportive environment for students beyond the classroom. The Resident Mentor resides on campus and collaborates closely with both the hostel and academic teams to foster the holistic development of students—emotionally, socially, and academically.

Key Responsibilities:
Guide and support students during study hours and throughout their residential life, helping them develop strong habits, confidence, and emotional resilience.
Assist the hostel team in managing day-to-day routines including wake-up, mealtimes, hygiene, and bedtime, ensuring safety and consistency.
Provide individual attention and emotional support to students, acting as a trusted adult they can turn to.
Assist students with homework, projects, and exam preparation, while encouraging independent learning and peer collaboration.
Help instill values such as empathy, responsibility, and cooperation by modeling respectful and inclusive behavior.
Monitor student well-being and report any concerns related to physical or mental health to the appropriate staff in a timely and discreet manner.
Build strong, trusting relationships with students, families, and school staff, fostering open communication and mutual respect.
Maintain confidential student records as needed and contribute to reports on student progress and development.
Help plan and facilitate co-curricular activities, evening circles, celebrations, or weekend programs that contribute to students’ social and emotional growth.
Actively engage in school-wide initiatives, learning sessions, community events, and reflection practices as part of the broader Ayang team.
Be available to respond appropriately to any emergencies that may arise in the hostel, ensuring students' safety and well-being.

Key Role Requirements:
A deep sense of care, patience, and love for working with children and adolescents in a residential setting.
Strong commitment to supporting the holistic development of students—emotionally, socially, and academically.
Ability to create a safe, inclusive, and joyful hostel environment where every child feels valued and at home.
Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to build trust and rapport with students, families, and colleagues.
Willingness to collaborate with a diverse team, accept feedback with humility, and engage in ongoing self and collective learning.
Strong sense of responsibility, emotional maturity, and discretion in handling confidential matters and sensitive student needs.
Deep commitment to the values of equity, compassion, and community-centered education.
Ability to remain calm and responsive in challenging or unexpected situations, ensuring the safety and well-being of children.

Qualifications:
Any undergraduate or postgraduate degree in any subject.
Proficiency in English is mandatory.
Freshers are encouraged to apply (relevant experience will be an added advantage).
