Background
Founded in 2002, CSM is a Not-for-Profit Organisation that has been an early proponent of business and multi-stakeholder engagement in Climate Action in India. CSM has systematically worked in the field of Climate Change Response, Sustainable Agriculture and Responsible Business conduct by- publishing extensive research, creating learning material, organizing education and awareness activities on climate change, corporate social responsibility and sustainability practices.
Over the past decade CSM has been developing a programmatic approach in these areas and is incubating the Fairtrade India Project for developing sustainable and equitable food and fashion systems in India; working on just transition roadmaps for decarbonisation by textiles sector MSMEs; developing an integrated sustainable value-chain with the tribal community of Andhra Pradesh and undertaking education campaigns related to SDG12, Fairtrade and adoption of sustainable practices by businesses, institutions and citizens. CSM under its project for “Developing an integrated sustainable value-chain with the tribal communities of Andhra Pradesh” is supporting the community in Alluri Sitarama Raju (ASR) District and Andhra Pradesh to develop Fairtrade and Organic Certified coffee and spice value chains.
Position Summary
One of the current priorities of the CSM project in ASR district is to develop sustainable Fairtrade Certified Coffee and Spice value chains from Alluri Sitarama Raju (ASR) District of Andhra Pradesh to enable thousands of small holder tribal farmers earn a more sustainable livelihood. CSM is looking for a Senior Officer Supply & Quality management for Coffee & Spices (SOSQM). Based in ASR district, you will be working closely with a small core field team. The SOSQM will be responsible for supporting the Farmer Producer Organisations (FPOs) for undertaking planning, aggregation and procurement of coffee and spices from their members in an efficient manner while ensuring a fair remuneration to the farmers. In addition the SOSQM will be involved in managing the storage and processing of the material so as to minimize any losses, meet market requirements and ensure timely supply and delivery of the materials from the FPOs working with CSM. In addition the SOSQM will also be responsible for quality management across the supply chain and primary processing of the coffee and spices. You’ll be highly motivated and field oriented, and will already have experience in managing procurement, processing and quality management for coffee and spices.
Key Responsibilities
• Supply Chain & Procurement Management
- Design and manage efficient, traceable supply chains aggregating from small holder farmer members of the FPOs being supported by the project.
- Lead procurement planning and execution for coffee, pepper and turmeric
- Build relationships with FPOs and smallholder growers
- Ensure timely aggregation, storage, and logistics
- Monitor supply volumes and costs
- Ensure compliance of procurement processes with certification requirements of Fairtrade and Organic including the necessary documentation, financial trail and record keeping linked to procurement and processing.
• Quality Management & Improvement
- Develop and implement quality standards and SOPs for each step of harvest, post-harvest to sales in specific format, grades and processing required by the market
- Lead quality improvement initiatives
- Train farmers and build their capacity to maintain quality parameters for harvesting, drying, grading, and storage
• Processing & Value Addition
- Oversee processing for coffee, pepper, and turmeric as per the market requirements
- Monitor the processing undertaking at the centralized facilities of the FPOs as well as at farmer levels where required.
- Improve processing efficiency and reduce losses
- Identify value addition opportunities which would benefit the farmers and the FPOs
• Field Coordination & Farmer Engagement
- Work with smallholder farmers, tribal communities and FPOs to manage the procurement and quality management processes
- Support farmer institutions
- Coordinate with NGOs and government stakeholders
• Monitoring & Reporting
- Document and track procurement and quality metrics
- Maintain traceability documentation
- Prepare operational reports
Person Specification (Essential)
• Bachelor’s degree in Agriculture, Food Tech, Supply Chain, or related subjects
• 3-7 years of relevant experience of sourcing and quality management in agricultural supply chains. Specifically related to sourcing produce from farmers and FPOs.
• Experience of sourcing coffee and some spices end to end from farm/plantation to the end buyers.
• Experience of managing/operating value addition centres for coffee and spices.
• Knowledge of agri-based supply chains and logistics
• Knowledge of quality requirements and processes for coffee and spices
• Solutions oriented, self-driven, data oriented, ability to take initiative
• Understanding of Commercial frameworks for agri-value chains
• Team player and flexible to undertake any task to achieve team objective
• Knowledge of quality standards in Coffee and Sustainability frameworks
• Working knowledge, speaking and understanding of Telugu
• Strong field orientation and stakeholder management skills
