About the project- India has made significant progress toward the goal of eliminating Tuberculosis (TB) through strengthened screening, diagnostic, treatment, and community engagement efforts under the National Tuberculosis Elimination Program (NTEP). Continued innovation in early identification of individuals with symptoms suggestive of TB remains critical to accelerating progress toward elimination targets.
The Cough Syrup Sales Surveillance Initiative represents an innovative community-based approach to identify individuals who may be experiencing persistent cough, one of the most common symptoms associated with Tuberculosis. Many individuals experiencing cough symptoms initially seek relief through cough syrups purchased from pharmacies, chemist outlets, retail chains, public Ayurveda, Yoga and Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha and Homeopathy (AYUSH) facilities, and digital pharmacy platforms before accessing diagnostic services.
The initiative seeks to transform these routine health-seeking interactions into opportunities for early symptom identification, beneficiary engagement, and timely linkage to Tuberculosis screening and diagnostic services. Through participating pharmacies and other distribution channels, cough syrup purchasers will be registered through the TB Mukt Bharat application and systematically followed up to assess symptom persistence and facilitate access to appropriate health services.
To support this effort, Call Center services will be utilized for beneficiary engagement and follow-up mechanism. The Call Center will conduct structured outreach to registered purchasers, provide health education and counselling, facilitate referrals for TB testing, monitor testing completion, and generate programmatic insights to strengthen surveillance and service delivery.
By creating a systematic pathway from symptom identification to diagnostic evaluation, the initiative aims to strengthen early detection of presumptive TB cases, improve access to diagnostic services, and contribute to national efforts toward TB elimination.
2. Objective
The Call Centre will serve as a centralized beneficiary engagement and follow-up platform to support the Cough Syrup Sales Surveillance Initiative. The specific objectives are to:
- Identify individuals with persistent cough symptoms through systematic follow-up of registered cough syrup purchasers and facilitate early recognition of presumptive TB.
- Strengthen linkage to TB screening and diagnostic services by providing counselling, referral support, and information on accessible testing facilities.
- Improve completion of the screening and diagnostic cascade through structured follow-up, reminder services, and tracking of testing status among referred beneficiaries.
- Generate real-time programmatic data and insights to support monitoring, decision-making, and continuous improvement of the Cough Syrup Sales Surveillance Initiative at national, state, and district levels.
