About us
Ayang Trust is a social purpose organization working towards building the ecosystem for sustainable self empowered communities in Northeast India through interventions in quality education and livelihoods. At the heart of the organization is The Hummingbird School started in January 2017 to provide a contextual and holistic education to the children of Majuli, set up completely in partnership with the local community. Ayang grew out of the various and urgent needs of the people of Majuli and was registered in November 2017 and has since expanded its work into a diverse range of development programs.

The Opportunity
The Hummingbird School is seeking a passionate and committed Special Educator to strengthen our inclusive education practices and support students with diverse learning needs from LKG to Grade 10. In addition to supporting inclusive classrooms, the Special Educator will serve as the Class Teacher for our newly established NIOS batch (Grades 7–8) and teach English, while providing remedial instruction for students requiring additional academic support. This role is ideal for someone who believes every child can learn, values inclusive education, and enjoys working collaboratively with teachers, students, and families. We welcome applicants who may be early in their careers–curiosity, empathy, and a willingness to learn are just as important as prior experience.
Key Responsibilities:
Inclusive Education & Student Support (LKG–Grade 10)
Identify students requiring additional learning support using appropriate screening tools suited to low-resource settings.
Work closely with classroom teachers to implement effective classroom-based screening and observation practices.
Develop individualized learning strategies, classroom accommodations, and differentiated instructional approaches for students with diverse learning needs.
Provide guidance and coaching to teachers on inclusive teaching practices and classroom interventions.
Monitor student progress, maintain learning documentation, and periodically review intervention plans.
Collaborate with parents, teachers, and school leadership to ensure holistic support for students.
NIOS Programme (Grades 7–8)
Serve as the Class Teacher for the NIOS batch.
Teach English using a comprehensive literacy (Whole Language) approach that builds reading, writing, speaking, and comprehension skills.
Foster an inclusive, engaging, and supportive classroom environment that encourages independent learning and confidence.
Remedial Education
Conduct remedial learning sessions for younger students requiring additional academic support.
Design engaging, child-centred interventions that strengthen foundational literacy and language skills.
Continuously assess student progress and adapt instructional strategies to meet individual learning needs.
Collaboration & School Contribution
Work collaboratively with teachers, school leadership, and support staff to strengthen inclusive education across the school.
Participate actively in school meetings, professional development sessions, and collaborative planning.
Contribute to creating a safe, caring, and equitable learning environment for every child.

Is patient, adaptable, and collaborative in their approach to teaching and teamwork.
Is willing to live and work in Majuli, Assam.

Qualifications:
Bachelor's or Master's degree in Special Education (B.Ed./M.Ed. Special Education), or
RCI-recognized Diploma in Special Education, or
Degree in Education, Psychology, or a related field with demonstrated interest in inclusive education.
RCI (Rehabilitation Council of India) registration is preferred but not mandatory.
Prior experience working with children with diverse learning needs is desirable but not essential.
