Project Focus: Maternal & Child Health (MCH) and Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs)
1. Position Overview:
The Nurse Mentor will play a critical role in improving the quality of clinical care at public health facilities by providing hands-on mentoring, skill-building, and supportive supervision to frontline healthcare providers.
The role focuses on strengthening service delivery across the continuum of care—antenatal, intrapartum, postnatal, newborn care, and NCD services—through regular facility-based mentoring, demonstrations, and quality improvement processes.
The Nurse Mentor will work closely with the block health system (especially with ANMs and CHOs) and the project team to ensure adherence to project guidelines and improve patient outcomes in rural and hard-to-reach settings.
2. Key Responsibilities::
A. Clinical Mentoring & Service Delivery Strengthening:
• Provide on-site, hands-on mentoring to ANMs, Staff Nurses, CHOs, and other facility-based providers
• Demonstrate and reinforce key clinical skills:
• Antenatal care (ANC): examination, investigations, and risk identification
• Labour room management: normal delivery, partograph use, complication identification
• Essential newborn care and neonatal resuscitation
• Postnatal care for mother and newborn
• NCD screening, diagnosis, treatment adherence (BP, blood sugar), and counselling
• Support high-risk case identification and management, including home visits (ANC, PNC, child health, NCD cases)
• Promote adherence to standard treatment guidelines and protocols
B. NCD Program Implementation Support:
Support implementation of NCD services at SHCs/HWCs and PHCs:
• Organize/support weekly/monthly NCD camps with CHOs
• Facilitate teleconsultations where applicable
• Coordinate with PHCs for referrals and follow-ups
• Support patient counselling and community mobilization
• Participate in remote outreach camps
• Provide handholding support to staff for screening and management of:
• Hypertension (HTN)
• Diabetes Mellitus (DM)
• Any other as may be added during the course of the project
C. Supportive Supervision & Field Monitoring:
• Conduct regular visits to Sub-Centres, PHCs, and delivery points
• Observe service delivery and provide real-time feedback
• Identify skill gaps and develop individual mentoring plans
• Strengthen clinical decision-making and case management practices
D. Training & Capacity Building:
• Plan and conduct skills-based trainings and refresher sessions in coordination with the Senior Nurse Mentor
• Support development and use of training materials, checklists, and job aids
• Build capacity of frontline workers on:
• Maternal and newborn care
• Infection Prevention and Control (IPC)
• NCD screening, referral, and follow-up
• Use demonstration, observation, and hands-on practice as key mentoring approaches
E. Monitoring, Documentation & Reporting
• Maintain mentoring logs, visit reports, and skill assessment records
• Track progress of mentees and facilities against defined indicators
• Support data collection, validation, and use for program improvement
• Submit weekly and monthly reports to the Senior Nurse Mentor
F. Coordination & Health System Strengthening
Coordinate closely with:
• ANMs, Nursing Officers, CHOs
• ASHAs and supervisors
• Conduct monthly review meetings with ANMs and ASHAs to review field activities and high-risk cases
• Participate in block-level review meetings
• Ensure alignment with NHM guidelines and program priorities
• Strengthen referral linkages and continuum of care
G. Community Engagement (Supportive Role)
Support community-level awareness on:
• Maternal and newborn health
• Danger sign identification and home visits
• NCD prevention and screening
• Provide technical inputs during community outreach sessions
3. Required Qualifications & Skills:
Education:
• ANM / GNM / B.Sc. Nursing (B.Sc. preferred)
• Post Basic B.Sc. or specialized training in maternal & newborn health (preferred)
Experience:
• 1-2 years of clinical experience, preferably in:
• Labour room / maternity ward
• Public health facilities (SHC/HWC/PHC)
• Experience in mentoring, training, or supportive supervision preferred
Technical & Core Skills:
• Strong clinical knowledge in maternal and newborn care
• Understanding of national programs (NHM, RMNCH+A, NCD)
• Ability to train and mentor adult learners
• Good communication and interpersonal skills
• Problem-solving and analytical ability
• Basic computer skills (MS Office, reporting formats)
• Ability to work independently in resource-limited settings
• Ability to ride a two-wheeler (preferred)
4. Other Requirement:
• Willingness to travel extensively in remote and hilly areas
• Fluency in Hindi; English preferred; local dialects an advantage
• Strong commitment to working with underserved communities

5. Reporting Structure:
Reports to: Senior Nurse Mentor
Works closely with: Project Coordinator and Block Health Team
6. Remuneration will be based on experience and prior salary, ranging from Rs.20,000 to Rs.25,000 per month.
