Vikramshila Education Resource Society, a non-profit organization established in 1989, is dedicated to enhancing school education, particularly early childhood education, literacy, numeracy, and primary and secondary learning. With a focus on curricular and co-curricular areas, Vikramshila works with state systems to drive curricular reform, resource development, capacity building, and on-the-ground model creation for strategic, demonstration, and scaling initiatives. Headquartered in Kolkata, Vikramshila operates field offices in Lucknow, Guwahati, Pune and Ranchi, impacting schools, Anganwadi centres, madrasas, and community learning centres across West Bengal, Bihar, Assam, Jharkhand, Uttar Pradesh, Odisha, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Rajasthan, and Maharashtra.
 
About the Organization’s Work in Foundational Numeracy
Vikramshila is currently working on Foundational Numeracy (FN) across five states in India. Our engagement with state governments includes content creation, resource development, continuous professional development for teachers and other stakeholders, facilitation of state-level academic planning, and support for the development of robust mentoring and monitoring mechanisms. Within the organization, a Central Resource Team for Numeracy and Mathematics Education provides academic and technical support to all state project teams and to other education initiatives undertaken by Vikramshila.
 
The Manager – Numeracy will be a part of this central team. The role requires frequent travel to different states to provide ongoing academic and technical support to state teams, ensuring effective implementation and strengthening of numeracy initiatives across projects.
 
Position Overview:
The Manager (Central Team – Numeracy) will support the design, development, and implementation of high-quality foundational numeracy resources and capacity-building initiatives across multiple state-level projects. The role involves developing instructional materials, supporting teacher professional development, and providing technical guidance to project teams working on Foundational Literacy and Numeracy (FLN). The position also requires collaboration with government agencies, partner organizations, and internal teams to strengthen early mathematics teaching and learning.
 
Key Responsibilities:
 
Instructional Design and Material Development
  • Participate in the review of state curricula, textbooks, and other academic materials as required for engagements with different states across India.
  • Prepare review reports and analytical notes for internal use and for sharing with government agencies and collaborating partners.
  • Design and develop FLN academic frameworks, training modules, and Teaching Learning Materials (TLMs) for early grade classrooms in collaboration with members of the central team.
  • Develop numeracy resources for teachers, such as teacher guidebooks and other reference materials based on emerging needs from various interventions.
  • Design and develop student learning resources, including workbooks, work cards, and other classroom materials aligned with project requirements.
  • Take a lead role and provide technical inputs in the development of instructional materials for teachers and students under different projects.
  • Participate in meetings, consultations, and workshops related to content development with state governments and partner organizations.
Professional Development
  • Design and develop needs assessment tools for continuous professional development of different stakeholders and conduct studies to inform capacity-building initiatives.
  • Develop and implement continuous professional development plans for stakeholders at the state and project levels.
  • Prepare workshop plans, facilitate training sessions, and organize training materials for teachers and other stakeholders.
  • Develop conceptual base documents on early mathematics and numeracy to support training and capacity-building initiatives.
  • Prepare an annual capacity-building calendar for different numeracy projects and coordinate with team members to ensure its effective implementation.
Mentoring and Coordination
  • Provide technical guidance and mentoring support on numeracy to project teams working across different states and contribute to the continuous capacity building of team members.
  • Support the Project Manager in coordinating with project teams and ensuring timely completion of project deliverables.
  • Participate in periodic review meetings with stakeholders to assess progress and outcomes of program activities.
  • Take responsibility for monitoring and ensuring effective implementation of activities outlined in the annual operational plan.
  • Represent Vikramshila in meetings, consultations, and workshops with government departments, academic institutions, and partner organizations.
Self-Development and Research
  • Study national and international research, policy documents, and frameworks related to numeracy and mathematics education to strengthen the organization’s pedagogical approaches and strategies.
  • Visit schools to understand implementation processes, contextual challenges, and field realities to improve program design and execution.
  • Support the Team Lead in preparing periodic and final project reports in collaboration with team members, including the M&E team.
  • Document best practices, case studies, and success stories from field interventions for internal learning and external dissemination.
  • Undertake any other responsibilities assigned by the organization or the reporting authority.
Educational Qualification
  • Master’s Degree in Mathematics or Pure Science (preferably Mathematics).
  • Mathematics as a subject up to the undergraduate level is mandatory.
Experience
  • Relevant experience in Foundational Literacy and Numeracy (FLN) initiatives.
  • Experience in content development, capacity building, and field-level planning and management.
Language Requirements
  • Hindi (mandatory) – ability to develop academic and training content.
  • Working proficiency in English and Bengali.
