About the Position
NEEDS is looking for a technically competent and creatively oriented Officer – Product Innovation & Design to strengthen its product development and artisan-support ecosystem. The position will be responsible for translating ideas into practical, market-oriented product designs and enabling rural artisans to produce these designs with precision and consistency.
The ideal candidate will have a Civil Engineering background with strong proficiency in computer-aided design, 3D modelling and product visualisation, along with an ability to understand the technical anatomy of a product and convert design concepts into production-ready specifications.
Key Competencies Required
• Expert-level proficiency in AutoCAD for 2D technical drawings, detailing and production drawings.
• Strong skills in 3D product design and modelling, preferably using one or more of:
1. SolidWorks
2. Fusion 360
3. SketchUp
• Autodesk 3ds Max / Blender for 3D visualisation and product presentation.
• Ability to develop 3D models, exploded views, sectional drawings and assembly drawings.
• Ability to analyse the anatomy, structure, dimensions, joints, components and functionality of a product and convert these into clear production designs.
• Ability to prepare dimensioned drawings, material specifications, component details and fabrication instructions that artisans can understand and use.
• Ability to redesign or modify existing products to improve functionality, aesthetics, manufacturability, ergonomics and cost efficiency.
• Experience in developing products using bamboo, wood, metal, natural fibre or other rural/artisan-based materials will be an added advantage.
• Ability to work directly with artisans and translate technical designs into simple, practical production processes.
• Understanding of prototyping, product testing, design iteration and quality improvement.
• Good understanding of engineering principles, measurements, material behaviour, fabrication and structural stability.
Key Responsibilities
1. Develop innovative products and product prototypes based on market requirements and artisan capabilities.
2. Prepare detailed 2D and 3D designs and production drawings.
3. Analyse existing products and develop improved versions suitable for artisan production.
4. Work closely with artisans to understand traditional production techniques and integrate them with modern design.
5. Develop design libraries, product catalogues, technical drawings and production manuals.
6. Convert prototypes into standardised production designs with clear dimensions and specifications.
7. Support artisans in understanding drawings, measurements, assembly and finishing requirements.
8. Conduct design experiments and develop new products using locally available and sustainable materials.
9. Coordinate with marketing and enterprise teams to ensure that products are marketable, scalable and commercially viable.
10. Maintain digital repositories of CAD files, 3D models, drawings, prototypes and product specifications.

Candidates will be assessed primarily on their demonstrated technical and creative competency, including their ability to show actual CAD drawings, 3D models, prototypes, product designs or a portfolio of relevant work.
Salary will be negotiated based on demonstrated competency, portfolio, experience and ability to independently deliver product innovation and design assignments.
