South Kolkata Hamari Muskan (SKHM) is implementing a project in the Bowbazar red-light area to support adult women and young women from vulnerable communities in accessing safer livelihood and employment opportunities. The project will support 50 adult women through alternative livelihood and enterprise development and 30 young women through job-readiness, digital literacy and skill-development pathways. The project also recognizes the psychosocial challenges, stigma and pressures faced by participants as they work towards greater independence and economic security.

South Kolkata Hamari Muskan (SKHM) is looking for an Adult Literacy Trainer to conduct basic literacy sessions for adult women (age 30 to 45 years and above) from vulnerable communities in the Bowbazar red-light area as part of a livelihood development programme.

The sessions will focus on helping women who have limited or no literacy level on basic Bengali, English and Mathematics todevelop the foundational level of literacy which is required for everyday life and livelihood-related activities.

Key responsibilities:

Facilitate regular, learner-friendly sessions for women with little or no formal education.
Develop foundational skills in reading, writing, and basic numeracy according to each learner’s level.
Use simple, participatory, and activity-based teaching methods suitable for adult learners.
Help participants read and understand simple words, sentences, signs, forms, notices, and instructions.
Support women in writing their names, addresses, simple applications, messages, and basic personal information.
Develop practical numeracy skills such as counting, addition, subtraction, understanding money, prices, measurements, and basic calculations.
Adapt sessions to participants with different levels of literacy, prior exposure and learning ability.
Provide patient, hands-on guidance and individual support where required.
Maintain regularity and punctuality in conducting sessions.
Coordinate with the SKHM team regarding attendance, participation and progress.
Work respectfully and sensitively with women from diverse and vulnerable backgrounds.

Requirements:

Good working knowledge of training adults to develop basic literacy level.
Experience in teaching or facilitating basic literacy is preferred.
Ability to teach absolute beginners using simple, practical methods.
Patience and an encouraging approach when working with adult learners who may have little or no previous literacy exposure.
Experience working with women from disadvantaged or vulnerable communities will be an advantage.
Reliability and punctuality.

Location: Bowbazar, Kolkata
Engagement: Part-time / consultant basis / twice a week
