The Centre for Social Justice (CSJ) is a socio-legal organisation dedicated to ensuring access to justice for marginalized and vulnerable communities. CSJ interventions span grassroots legal aid centres, paralegal programs, and trainings across multiple states in India.
Position Overview
CSJ generates significant data from grassroots interventions across diverse field locations. Quantitative case and program data are captured through an open-source platform called Avni, while on-ground realities and contextual nuances are documented via Field Office Reports (qualitative narratives).
We are seeking a detail-driven, long-term Data Analyst to bridge field data and institutional decision-making. The person in this role will clean, organize, synthesize, and analyze both quantitative and qualitative data streams. Utilizing Advanced Excel, the analyst will translate raw field inputs into functional trackers, visual dashboards, thematic summaries, and actionable programmatic insights.
Key Responsibilities
1. Quantitative Data Management & Cleaning
• Extract, clean, validate, and organize field datasets coming in from the Avni platform.
• Identify data entry gaps, inconsistencies, and errors, coordinating with field teams to resolve them.
• Consolidate and maintain central tracking sheets across multiple field locations and time periods.
2. Practical Data Analysis & Excel Reporting
• Analyze field data using Advanced Excel to identify trends, performance metrics, and key operational insights.
• Create and maintain automated Excel trackers, summary templates, and formulas to streamline recurring reporting.
• Cross-tabulate variables to track community reach, case progression, and program milestones.
3. Qualitative Data Synthesis
• Review and extract key themes from periodic Field Office Reports and ground-level case narratives.
• Combine qualitative stories and field context with quantitative metrics to provide a complete picture of on-ground impact and challenges.
4. Dashboards & Visualization
• Design easy-to-read Excel dashboards, charts, and summary decks for internal leadership and field reviews.
• Present key data points and summaries during periodic review meetings to guide strategic decisions.
5. Field Coordination & Quality Assurance
• Undertake occasional visits to CSJ field offices to understand ground operations and data collection challenges.
• Orient and support field staff on standard data entry practices in Avni and reporting formats.
Qualifications & Technical Skills
• Educational Background: Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Data Analytics, Economics, Statistics, Social Sciences, Development Studies, Commerce, or related fields.
• Work Experience: 2 to 5 years of hands-on experience handling, organizing, and analyzing datasets (experience in non-profits, research organizations, or development programs is an added advantage).
• Excel Proficiency: Advanced command of MS Excel (XLOOKUP/VLOOKUP, Pivot Tables & Pivot Charts, Conditional Formatting, Data Validation, Nested Formulas, and Dashboard creation).
• Analytical Mindset: Strong attention to detail with the ability to spot errors and make sense of both numbers and narrative reports.
• Language Proficiency: Good written and verbal communication skills in English; working knowledge of Gujarati and/or Hindi is highly preferred for field coordination.
