Position: Senior/Program Office Clinical Microbiologist - AMR PMU
An international non-governmental organization seeking highly motivated Senior Program Officer at New Delhi.
The Clinical Microbiologist will provide technical assistance to the CBDDR, NCDC for the AMR Program Management Unit (PMU) anchored at CBDDR, NCDC. The position will support the implementation of the NAP AMR including antimicrobial stewardship (AMS) implementation, strengthening AMR surveillance and laboratory systems, supporting SAPCAR development, and supporting the technical design and field-testing of an AMR technology innovation in partnership with India AMR Innovation Hub (IAIH).
Roles and Responsibilities
• Provide technical assistance to NCDC/CBDDR for NAP implementation, including IPC, Surveillance, and design of stewardship interventions.
• Support development of facility-specific tools e.g. antibiograms and analytical tools and reports based on national and state surveillance data for the CBDDR
• Provide mentoring and supportive supervision visits to state/district hospital microbiologists, clinicians, and pharmacy teams.
• Support NCDC/CBDDR in strengthening AMR detection and surveillance in identified laboratories, aligned with national protocols.
• Support quality assurance of laboratory methods and surveillance data across the demonstration state.
• Provide technical inputs for the selection, design, and field-testing of innovative AMR technology (diagnostic, surveillance, or stewardship tool) in partnership with IAIH under the guidance of NCDC/CBDDR.
• Support development of implementation protocols, evaluation frameworks, and regulatory and ethical approvals for the pilot.
• Document technical findings and lessons to inform national scale-up and policy integration.
• Design and deliver technical training for clinicians, pharmacists, nurses, and laboratory staff on AMS, IPC, and use of local AMR data for decision-making as per the need of NCDC/CBDDR
• Support cascading training models to expand technical reach across hospital networks.
• Coordinate with the State-level Microbiologist/AMS Coordinator to align technical activities with the NAP workplan.
• Contribute to documentation of the AMS implementation package (SOPs, tools, case studies) for replication across states.
Qualifications & Experience
Required: 2 or more years of post-MD experience in clinical microbiology, with exposure to laboratory strengthening, hospital infection control or antimicrobial stewardship.
Preferred: Experience with AMR surveillance networks (e.g., NARS-Net), public health programs, or government-facing technical assistance roles.
Skills and Competencies
• Sound knowledge of clinical microbiology, antimicrobial susceptibility testing (AST), and antibiogram development.
• Familiarity with public health structures and systems for AMR containment
• Knowledge and experience in use of WHONET will be preferred
• Experience mentoring hospital AMS and HAICC committees and providing supportive supervision to clinical and laboratory teams.
• Ability to engage with government counterparts (NCDC, state health departments, medical colleges) and multi-disciplinary teams.
• Strong analytical, documentation, and technical report-writing skills.
• Familiarity with regulatory and ethical approval processes for field-testing health technologies.
• Ability and willingness to travel extensively to demonstration state hospitals and priority states.

Additional Information
The role requires close, day-to-day technical coordination with NCDC/CBDDR. The position is expected to provide hands-on support across NAP strategic pillars and interventions including antimicrobial stewardship, laboratory surveillance, and technology piloting, while mentoring the PMU's Public Health Consultant and State-level Microbiologist/AMS Coordinator.
