About the Project:
The Take-Home Ration (THR) Project is a pioneering initiative of the Government of Uttar Pradesh (GoUP), implemented through a strategic partnership between the Uttar Pradesh State Rural Livelihoods Mission (UPSRLM) and the Integrated Child Development Services (ICDS). The project promotes a decentralized, women-led model for the production and distribution of fortified supplementary nutrition through 204 Self-Help Group (SHG)-managed THR enterprises across 43 districts. These enterprises supply nutritious food to nearly 99,000 Anganwadi Centres, contributing to improved nutrition outcomes for women and children while generating sustainable livelihood opportunities for rural women.
As the technical support partner, the organization provides comprehensive techno-managerial assistance to UPSRLM to enhance the performance, sustainability, and scalability of THR enterprises. Support encompasses production process optimization, technology integration, quality assurance and food safety systems, regulatory compliance, enterprise management, capacity building of SHG members, business performance monitoring, infrastructure strengthening, and the development of standardized operational frameworks. Through continuous handholding and data-driven performance management, the project seeks to build resilient and commercially viable nutrition enterprises.
To accelerate innovation and demonstrate replicable best practices, three THR enterprises have been established as Centers of Excellence (CoEs) at Hilauli (Unnao), Fatehpur Sikri (Agra), and Chiraigaon (Varanasi). These CoEs serve as demonstration and learning hubs for piloting advanced food processing technologies, operational efficiency improvements, quality management systems, food safety protocols, renewable energy solutions, and sustainable manufacturing practices. The learnings generated through these pilots are intended to inform the scale-up of proven interventions across the broader network of THR enterprises in the state.
The project envisions a sustainable ecosystem of women-led nutrition enterprises that consistently deliver safe, high-quality, and nutritionally compliant products. Key expected outcomes include strengthened enterprise efficiency and financial sustainability, improved quality and food safety compliance, enhanced technical and managerial capacities of SHG women entrepreneurs, increased adoption of innovative and clean technologies, and the establishment of a scalable model that advances nutritional security, women’s economic empowerment, local employment generation, and inclusive rural development across Uttar Pradesh.
