1. BACKGROUND/RATIONALE
The SBC Section of our client at Madhya Pradesh provides evidence-based support to promote positive and measurable social and behavior change at both community and system levels by integrating the priorities in the areas of multiple sectors: Health, Nutrition, WASH, Education, SPSP. The SBC sector in Madhya Pradesh supports the state government with the appropriate, context specific and evidence-based SBC strategies and interventions, customized to the government programmes for systems strengthening for wider impact.
Madhya Pradesh faces multiple challenges in the form of deprivations in nutrition, health, education, and other sectors. These multiple deprivations (low immunization, underweight, wasting, anemia, stunting, low attendance, retention, drop out) affects children growth, development, well-being and overall health and survival. Several Government flagship programmes and efforts such as Poshan Abhiyan 2.0, Integrated Management of Acute Malnutrition, Routine Immunization Programme, Samagra Shiksha, are aimed at benefitting children, women and communities. The programmes have been yielding results over the years, yet the challenges persist at the demand level with communities’ perceptions, intent and positive behaviour lagging. Children are at the core of our client’s work. Our client believes that the foundation of good nutrition includes improving women’s nutrition before, during, and after pregnancy; promoting and supporting exclusive breastfeeding for the first 6 months of a child’s life and continued breastfeeding to age 2 or beyond; facilitating timely, safe, appropriate, and high-quality complementary foods; and providing appropriate micronutrient interventions. Well-nourished, fully immunized children are healthier, more resistant to disease and crises, protected from developmental delays, have better IQ and perform better in school. This underscores the imperative for integrated and community-based interventions.
