Department Overview:
The Finance & Accounts department ensures accurate financial management, compliance, reporting, and transparency across CanKids projects and programs. The department supports program implementation by maintaining strong financial controls and donor-compliant accounting practices.
Role Overview:
The DGM– Finance is responsible for the end-to-end financial management and operational integrity of CanKids KidsCan across all regions and states. This role ensures financial operations are efficient, compliant, and aligned with the organisation’s programmatic goals. The DGM – Finance serves as the operational finance leader, translating CFO strategy into executed plans while supervising the Accounts team and multi-state finance staff for accurate, timely, and compliant financial output.
Key Responsibilities:
A. Overall Finance & Accounts Management:
• Assist team in day-to-day accounting and finance operations of the organization across all regions and states.
• Ensure timely closure of books of accounts on monthly, quarterly, and annual basis.
• Supervise accounting entries with regards to Donor Accounting and Assist CFO for financial documentation across HO and state offices.
• Ensure proper implementation of accounting standards, internal controls, and financial SOPs.
• Monitor fund flow, utilisation, and budget adherence for all projects and programmes.
• Prepare and present monthly Budget vs Actual variance reports to the CFO with corrective recommendations.
• Manage and review quarterly forecasts and rolling cash flow projections.
B. Donor Reporting & Grant Financial Compliance:
• Preparation and review of donor-wise financial reports, utilisation certificates, fund statements, and budget vs actual reports.
• Ensure compliance with donor agreements, approved budgets, and donor-specific financial guidelines.
• Coordinate with programme teams and state finance staff for timely collection and validation of supporting documents.
• Review grant expenditures to ensure allowability, allocability, and proper coding against approved budget heads.
• Coordinate with Head Planning and provide financial inputs for new donor applications and renewals.
• Review project-wise burn rates, donor commitments, and budget monitoring monthly.
• Maintain project-wise and donor-wise fund accounting in line with each grant agreement
C. Statutory Audit / Internal Audit / Compliance/Donor Audit:
• Assist in and manage annual statutory audit, donor audits, and internal audits of the organisation.
• Ensure timely preparation and submission of audit schedules, ledgers, reconciliations, and supporting documents.
• Track closure of audit observations and implementation of corrective actions within stipulated timelines.
• Oversee compliance with FCRA regulations, CSR guidelines, Income Tax Act (Sections 12A, 80G), and FEMA as applicable.
D. Team Leadership & Capacity Building:
• Guide the finance and accounts team at Head Office and regional/state levels in co-ordination with GM Accounts
• Build capacity of finance staff on accounting systems, donor compliance, and statutory processes through regular training.
• Ensure standardisation and process discipline across all finance functions – HO and states.
• Ensure adequate redundancy in critical finance processes – no single point of failure in any function.
Required Qualifications and Skills
Education:
M. CoM / MBA / CA Inter
Essential:
• Semi- Qualified Chartered Accountant (CA) from ICAI; OR MBA (Finance) from a recognised institution.
• Minimum 6 years of progressive experience in finance department in NGO Sector.
• At least 4 years in a senior finance role within an NGO or development organisation.
• Working knowledge of FCRA, CSR compliance, and donor fund accounting frameworks.
• Proficiency in Tally ERP (or equivalent), advanced MS Excel, and MIS reporting tools.
Preferred
• Experience working with institutional donors (bilateral, multilateral, corporate CSR).
• Familiarity with multi-state operations and field finance management.
• Exposure to FEMA/foreign remittance regulations and Income Tax Act (Sections 12A, 80G).
• Experience in ERP implementation or finance system upgrades.
Experience:
6-8 years in finance/accounting roles, preferably in the NGO or development sector.
Skills & Competencies:
Technical:
• Financial analysis, management accounting, and budgetary control.
• Statutory and regulatory compliance – Direct/Indirect Tax, FCRA, Companies Act.
• Grant management, restricted fund accounting, and donor reporting.
• Internal audit coordination and financial process design.
Behavioural:
• High integrity and professional ethics – essential in a non-profit context.
• Strong analytical thinking with rigorous attention to detail.
• Ability to work independently and lead the finance function with minimal supervision.
• Collaborative approach with programme, operations, and state teams.
• Clear and confident communication with GM accounts, CFO, donors, auditors, and senior leadership.
