Job description:

Counselor

HAQ: Centre for Child Rights is dedicated to the recognition, promotion and protection of all rights for all children. As part of our initiative on access to justice and restorative care, we provide legal and counselling support, immediate medical and other rehabilitation support to child victims of abuse and exploitation. Our long-term aim is to work towards responsive, sensitive and accountable justice system for children. (For more information on HAQ please visit www.haqcrc.org)

HAQ is recruiting Counselors to provide psychosocial and emotional support to child sexual abuse survivors in Delhi. The Counselor is expected to provide direct support and counseling to children and their families during the criminal justice process. The primary responsibilities include:
• Managing cases assigned to him/her through providing the necessary psychosocial and emotional support;
• Counseling children and their families in order to help them deal with their trauma and build resilience;
• Working closely with the social worker and lawyer representing the child, accompanying the child or a family member for court hearings where needed;
• Working in coordination with other team members and service providers that HAQ engages with for providing legal and/or psychosocial support and restorative care to children;
• Engaging with government authorities, especially police, medical practitioners, Child Welfare Committee (CWC), Public Prosecutors and any other person that is important for the case;
• Maintaining regular updates of cases assigned, documenting their experiences and observations during case work management, and reporting on progress in each case as per the reporting schedules and formats;
• Develop training materials and undertake capacity building programmes for various stakeholders on child rights, child protection and issues concerning mental well-being of children;
• Participating in periodic review meetings;
• Participating in the discourse on child rights, child protection, access to justice and restorative through various platforms that HAQ engages with; and
• Contributing towards development of good practices in children’s access to restorative care.

Since HAQ’s Access to Justice Initiative also has a very strong action research and training component, counselor is expected to contribute to the creation of data for research, development of training materials and undertaking capacity building programmes for various stakeholders.

Required qualifications and attributes:
• Masters of Psychology or related degree
• Minimum 2 years prior work experience in the development or human rights sector preferred, ideally woman and child rights or development
• Demonstrated commitment to securing and promoting human rights of the most vulnerable
• Adequate understanding of child psychology and victimology
• Integrity and demonstrated excellence at work
• Proficient in Microsoft Office or similar software and database systems
• Excellent written and spoken English and Hindi and comprehension skills
• Excellent oral and written communication and interpersonal skills
• Demonstrated ability to work in a challenging, and sometimes hostile, environment
• Willingness to respond to sexual assault cases at the police station at all times, including odd hours.
• Persistent, bold, yet diplomatic, when standing up for child’s interests
• Willingness to learn and stretch oneself beyond comfort levels
• Ability to adapt to changing environment at work place and in the sector
• Commitment to meeting deadlines and achieving results under pressure
