1. Background:
Climate change is among the greatest health risks of the 21st Century. The impacts of climate change and environmental degradation put almost every child at risk directly or indirectly. The direct effects of climate change in the form of changing weather patterns, rapid and delayed onset extreme weather events such as storms, heatwaves and flooding, are associated with childhood morbidity and mortality.
Health care facilities (HCF) are the first and last line of defense against climate change impact on population. The World Health Organization (WHO) outlines the following risks for HCFs due to climate change: Infrastructure damage, increase in energy and water usage, lack of water or contaminated water in facilities, power outages, disrupted supply chain for essential supplies and medicines, unexpected outbreaks of food and water-borne diseases, unexpected outbreaks of vector-borne diseases, increased number of patients (particularly children and women) with diseases related to, or made worse by, undernutrition and mental health impacts on facility staff.
In partnership with the National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) UN ORGANISATION is providing support to develop prototypes and strengthen capacities of the health care system ensuring that these facilities and planning units are better prepared to adapt to and manage the challenges posed by extreme weather events.
