About the Project
The initiative for Evidence-based Primordial Prevention Model for reduction of modifiable risk factors for Diabetes is being implemented select districts with pre-dominantly tribal population across 5 states in India – Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Odisha, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand. This is a collaborative project between Piramal Swasthya Management & Research Institute, Madras Diabetes Research Foundation and Public Health Foundation of India. The project aims to achieve the following:
1. Evidence-based models for primordial and primary prevention developed based on formative research and pilot interventions in place and ready for scale up
2. It will be interventions to improve knowledge and practices towards risk factors of DM through school based primordial and primary prevention approaches
3. Increased health literacy and knowledge about diabetes prevention among tribal women of reproductive age through community influencers leveraging committees and institutions
About the Role
The National Nutritionist will be responsible for providing technical leadership and strategic direction for nutrition interventions under an evidence-based primordial prevention model aimed at addressing risk factors for non-communicable diseases, including diabetes. This role will involve identifying and promoting locally available, nutrient-rich food items, developing and strengthening meal plans for residential school settings, and systematically documenting local dietary practices.
The Nutritionist will work closely with program teams to design context-specific strategies that improve dietary behaviors, enhance diet diversity, and support healthier food environments in schools and communities. Additionally, the role will contribute to the development and implementation of plans that promote sustainable improvements in food habits, with a strong focus on prevention and long-term health outcomes.
The role is expected to work towards,
Technical Leadership
1. Understand programme goals and lead the development of a national nutrition strategy aligned with primordial prevention of non-communicable diseases (NCDs), including diabetes;
2. Design and adapt context-specific dietary guidelines for tribal populations, residential school settings, and community platforms;
3. Provide strategic guidance to ensure integration of nutrition interventions within the overall programme framework.
Programme Design and Standardization
4. Develop and standardize nutrition intervention packages, including school meal augmentation, community-based diets, and kitchen garden models;
5. Support assessment of the quality and effectiveness of nutrition interventions, including SHG-led initiatives such as ragi laddoos and mushroom cultivation;
6. Ensure cultural appropriateness of interventions for tribal populations and support the development of training modules and IEC materials;
7. Contribute to strengthening systems and processes for improving dietary practices and food environments in programme areas.
Capacity Building
8. Develop and implement capacity-building plans for state nutritionists and field teams;
9. Design training curricula and materials for EMRS cooks and community influencers (e.g., SHG workers) on nutritive value, healthy meal preparation, and dietary diversity;
10. Provide ongoing mentoring and technical support to ensure effective implementation of nutrition interventions.
Research and Evidence Generation
11. Ensure integration of the latest scientific evidence into programme design and implementation, including healthy dietary patterns and sugar reduction strategies;
12. Support assessment and documentation of nutritive values of locally available food items;
13. Generate evidence and insights to inform programme improvements and strengthen the evidence base for nutrition interventions;
14. Develop knowledge products, documentation, and reports for dissemination to internal and external stakeholders.

Essential Qualifications
Master’s/PhD in Public Health Nutrition / Clinical Nutrition / Dietetics or related field.
Essential Experience and Skills
• Minimum 8–12 years of experience in nutrition programs, preferably working on NCD/tribal health;
• Experience of providing technical assistance to government programmes (health/nutrition) and the government information systems will be preferred;
• Experience in documenting nutritive value of food items and will have knowledge about the institution where testing of food item for nutritive value is done
• Previous experience to have worked with or under guidance of NIN / ICMR / NIIRNCD / other national/state level institutes for nutrition
• Fluency in English and Hindi (reading, writing & oratory skills) is a prerequisite. Knowledge of other languages spoken in India would be an asset;
• Ability to effectively communicate, network and negotiate with a diverse range of stakeholders (internal and external), to achieve program objectives;
• Ability to work independently and good problem-solving skills;
• Ability to seamlessly multitask in a fast-paced environment, set priorities, and meet deadlines;
• Should be a team player with strong training & mentoring skills.
Additional preference (Desirable)
• Experience of working on tribal nutrition or tribal food practices
• Proven experience in working with tribal communities or in rural/underserved areas, with a particular focus on youth or students.
• Experience working with multi-stakeholder groups, including government agencies, NGOs, and local community leaders.
