About the Project
The initiative for Evidence-based Primordial Prevention Model for reduction of modifiable risk factors for Diabetes is being implemented select districts with pre-dominantly tribal population across 5 states in India – Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Odisha, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand. This is a collaborative project between Piramal Swasthya Management & Research Institute, Madras Diabetes Research Foundation and Public Health Foundation of India. The project aims to achieve the following:
1. Evidence-based models for primordial and primary prevention developed based on formative research and pilot interventions in place and ready for scale up
2. It will be interventions to improve knowledge and practices towards risk factors of DM through school based primordial and primary prevention approaches
3. Increased health literacy and knowledge about diabetes prevention among tribal women of reproductive age through community influencers leveraging committees and institutions
About the Role
The State Nutritionist will support the implementation, adaptation, and monitoring of nutrition interventions under an evidence-based primordial prevention model aimed at reducing risk factors for non-communicable diseases, including diabetes. The role will focus on contextualizing national strategies to the state context by identifying and promoting locally available, nutrient-rich food items, strengthening meal plans for residential school settings, and documenting local dietary practices.
Working closely with state and district programme teams, the State Nutritionist will help design and operationalize context-specific strategies to improve dietary behaviours, enhance diet diversity, and support healthier food environments in schools and communities. The role requires regular field engagement and travel across programme districts to gather insights, support implementation, and develop practical field-level activity plans that promote sustainable improvements in food habits and long-term health outcomes.
The role is expected to work towards,
Programme Implementation
1. Support the rollout of nutrition interventions in schools and communities in alignment with programme plans and in coordination with the National Nutritionist;
2. Plan and implement strategies to improve school meal menus in EMRS and align community dietary practices with local food systems to enhance nutritional outcomes.
Community Engagement
3. Engage with community influencers, SHGs, and teachers to document local recipes, seasonal fruits, and vegetables, ensuring cultural appropriateness;
4. Promote positive dietary behaviour change (e.g., reduced sugar intake, balanced diets, use of traditional foods) through well-designed IEC materials and community messaging.
Capacity Building
5. Conduct training sessions for teachers, frontline workers, and peer educators on the nutritive value of foods and the importance of locally available food items;
6. Facilitate discussions with community members, tribal healers, and influencers to understand seasonal food availability and associated nutritional benefits;
7. Provide technical support for kitchen garden initiatives and food demonstration activities at school and community levels.
Data Collection and Research Support
8. Support documentation of good local food practices and the nutritional significance of locally available foods;
9. Develop and implement plans to disseminate these learnings and integrate them into EMRS kitchens as well as community-level practices.

Essential Qualifications
Master’s/PhD in Public Health Nutrition / Clinical Nutrition / Dietetics or related field.
Essential Experience and Skills
• Minimum 5-8 years of experience in nutrition programs, preferably NCD/tribal health;
• Experience of providing technical assistance to government programmes (health/nutrition) and the government information systems will be preferred;
• Experience in documenting nutritive value of food items and will have knowledge about the institution where testing of food item for nutritive value is done
• Previous experience to have worked with or under guidance of NIN / ICMR / NIIRNCD / other national/state level institutes for nutrition
• Fluency in English and Hindi (reading, writing & oratory skills) is a prerequisite. Knowledge of other languages spoken in India would be an asset;
• Ability to effectively communicate, network and negotiate with a diverse range of stakeholders (internal and external), to achieve program objectives;
• Ability to work independently and good problem-solving skills;
• Ability to seamlessly multitask in a fast-paced environment, set priorities, and meet deadlines;
• Should be a team player with strong training & mentoring skills.
Additional preference (Desirable)
• Experience of working on tribal nutrition or tribal food practices
• Proven experience in working with tribal communities or in rural/underserved areas, with a particular focus on youth or students.
• Experience working with multi-stakeholder groups, including government agencies, NGOs, and local community leaders.
